Mass Airflow Sensors can sometimes be successfully serviced with judicious use of carb cleaner after removal if the vane is sticking in its travel

A MAF sensor does not have any moving parts; it utilizes either a hot wire or hot film to measure air mass. BMW gradually phased out the older air flow meters(which did utilize a flapper door and a rheostat) and went to MAFs exclusively in 1996.
A dead MAF is often caused by an over-oiled gauze or foam aftermarket filter.

#2814 of 5349 Air Flow Sensor on 02 330i by mitchs5

I asked my dealer service tech to check one part at a time as the engine light code was for both the mass airflow sensor and the idle speed actuator control. I have been told mixture was too lean 41.7% and limit should be 39%. This caused mass air reading to be too high. So they replaced the idle control and retested and now all acceptable....so saved $400 on mass airflow repair and just got stuck with $300 for idle control...Can anyone explain what this all means as these % are hard for me to understand? Will I notice a performance improvement?

I had the same problem with my 03 330CI. They replaced the gas cap, which solved the problem. They also replaced the coils at the time as one of them had gone bad.

#2816 of 5349 Cost of Clutch? by endollan

I'm planning to buy a new Bimmer and learn stick on it. I was wondering does the full maintenance of the car cover everything including the clutch. I know I'm gonna slip. Any advice is welcome.

Why not buy an old heap for under a grand and learn on it? BMW WILL NOT replace a clutch which has been destroyed due to abuse.

A big "NO", unfortunately... I lived in Toronto, Canada for 16 years and last 4 years of it I had the 318i but I had the most difficult time with it. It just does not grab the road when it is snowy. I have the 2000 323i now and live in the Bay Area, CA. It is OK and enjoyable to drive it. I still love BMW no matter what... Good luck!

#2819 of 5349 automatic transmision safe mode by totallytea

Can anyone tell me what to do to fix my 1993 325is? The automatic tranny goes into safe mode and won't shift past third gear. One day it drove beautifully. The next day, I couldn't get past third! I tried new tranny module. New O2 sensor. New engine control unit. New exhaust. And it had a tranny put in about a year ago! Fluid level is fine. I think its electrical. It's at the shop but the shop can't figure it out either.

#2820 of 5349 Need Help- Brand New 06 330 High Pitch Noise by laurenxesq

May 16, 2006 (1:12 pm)

Just leased a brand new 06 330 last month. When driving above 80, hitting 80+ on the freeway, a high-pitch distorted tone/noise kicks in, near the front console/dash area. Anyone experiencing the same or similar problem? Dealer decline to diagnose the problem stating it is illegal to test drive client's vehicle above the legal speed limit; 55/65 mph. Can anyone please help me, please give me some advise. Thank you.

Yes. First, take some emery cloth, fine and clean the rust between the hub and the wheels. Then, apply a slight amount of anti-seize compound on the hub and you will never have this problem again. very easy. Something most dealers will never do.

I believe the dealer has to do it. I have not seen anywhere instructions to DIY.
