Date Investigation Opened : May 31, 2006
Date Investigation Closed : Open
ON JANUARY 6, 2006, THE OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION (ODI) OPENED A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGED FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATION WHILE DRIVING IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR (MY) 2004 JEEP LIBERTY VEHICLES. ODI SENT A LETTER TO THE MANUFACTURER ON FEBRUARY 7, 2006, REQUESTING INFORMATION ABOUT THESE AND OTHER JEEP LIBERTY VEHICLES. BASED ON THE INFORMATION REVIEWED IN PE06-004, THE RANGE OF SUBJECT VEHICLES UNDER INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ALL MY 2002-06 JEEP LIBERTY VEHICLES THAT USE THE SAME OR SUBSTANTIALLY SIMILAR FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT. ODI IS AWARE OF 495 NON-DUPLICATIVE COMPLAINTS THAT ALLEGE INVOLUNTARY FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATION IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES. ODI IS ALSO AWARE OF ONE NON-INJURY CRASH AND THREE ALLEGED INJURY INCIDENTS (TWO CRASH INCIDENTS AND ONE NON-CRASH INCIDENT) RELATED TO THE ALLEGED DEFECT RESULTING IN MINOR INJURIES. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE COMPLAINT COUNTS REPORTED ABOVE ONLY INCLUDE MY 2002-03 LIBERTY VEHICLES IF IT WAS DETERMINED THE ALLEGED BALL JOINT SEPARATION OCCURRED AFTER PRIOR RECALL REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED (SEE BELOW) OR IF THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SUBJECT TO THE PRIOR RECALL BECAUSE ITS VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN) FELL OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF AFFECTED VEHICLES IDENTIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER CONDUCTED A PRIOR SAFETY RECALL (03V-460) TO ADDRESS THE SUBJECT ISSUE IN CERTAIN MY 2002-03 JEEP LIBERTY VEHICLES. ACCORDING TO DAIMLERCHRYSLERS DEFECT INFORMATION REPORT TO THE AGENCY (IN ACCORDANCE WITH 49 CFR PART 573) DATED NOVEMBER 4, 2003, THE CONSTANT TENSION LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINTS MAY EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF LUBRICATION WHICH CAN LEAD TO CORROSION, ACCELERATED WEAR AND POSSIBLY SEPARATION FROM THE STEERING KNUCKLE. A CONSTANT TENSION BALL JOINT WHICH HAS SEPARATED FROM THE KNUCKLE MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL WITH MINIMAL ADVANCED WARNING. THE MANUFACTURER HAS MADE NUMEROUS CHANGES IN THE DESIGN, MATERIAL COMPOSITION, MANUFACTURE, QUALITY CONTROL, SUPPLY, AND INSTALLATION OF THE SUBJECT BALL JOINTS SINCE THE PRIOR SAFETY RECALL WAS INITIATED IN AN EFFORT TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE WITH RESPECT TO SEALING, LUBRICATION, AND JOINT RETENTION CAPABILITY. THE MANUFACTURER'S INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATION IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES IS ONGOING. ACCORDINGLY, THIS INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO AN ENGINEERING ANALYSIS TO FURTHER STUDY THE FREQUENCY AND SCOPE OF THE ALLEGED DEFECT AND THE ADEQUACY OF THE REMEDY PROVIDED BY THE PRIOR SAFETY RECALL.

I had the lower left ball joint on my 2002 Liberty fail today. Luckily I was in a shopping center parking lot. I had the lower ball joints replaced on recall in 2004.

I know that most people that post here arent happy....however, I thought people might want to know that there are some of us out here that are actually happy with our Jeep Libertys. I picked up an 06 Liberty Renegade a few weeks ago and just love it. The seats are fantastic, it has an amazing air cond system, the radio is great, it has a sunroof and it is really fun to drive. Yeah, so the gas mileage could be better, I knew that going in. I strap the kids into their car seats in the back and away we go, outside the city to visit with the cows and the horses at some nearby farms. I waited a long time to buy a Jeep - and this one is great! Hope a few other happy owners jump into this discussion once in a while too. Dave

#4120 of 4230 considering buying a liberty
Jul 16, 2006 (11:36 am)
I am writing this post looking for any info anyone can give me.
I am thinking about buying a jeep Liberty and have been doing some research on them.I have read about ball joint recalls and other recalls. What i want to know is do all the modle years of the liberty have this ball joint problem?are there specific modle years for this problem?are there any years i should stay away from.
I have been looking at the 2005 modle year does the ball joint probelm effect this modle year?what kind of problems has anyone come across in this modle year.
I currently own a 1997 dodge dakota 4x4 and have had nothing but problems with the ball joints both upper and lower and have had to replace them at my cost. The uppers are going out AGAIN.I don't want the same headaches again.
Does the liberty have this same problem of ball joints always going out every 30,000 miles.
Any feed back would be very apperciated.

donduck: Welcome to the forum. I had a 2002 and in 93,000 miles Left and right sided, top and bottom ball joints were replaced 5 times. I live on a very rough gravel, that goes up a steep grade for 1/4 mile, and 3/8 of a mile on the same but level road. I have put 14,000 miles on my first 2005 3.7 Limited Liberty, and traded it in on the 2005 Sport CRD (diesel) and I have experienced no problems with the ball joints at all. There seems to issues with the earlier years but if there are problems with the 2005's and 06's I don't think too much.
I would not let this issue be to worrisome.

How long should that drawbar me on the 2006 Liberty, so I don't have to take off the spare tire to tow?

#4124 of 4230 Interior dash console kits
Jul 20, 2006 (8:10 pm)
Has anyone purchased and installed a kit on their 06 liberty? I'm wanting to dress up the interior on this sport model, but afraid to buy one of the kits, thinking it might just be poorly fitting stickers. Thanks
