I have a 1972 Monte Carlo that I would like to sell. There's an emblem on the car that says 454 SS. Problem is, everything I've read about this car says GM didn't offer the SS package on the '72 Monte Carlo. Did some previous owner stick this on the car or did GM build a few of these?

(I know - this makes me sound like someone who knocks on doors & tries to sell religious magazines.) I'm so with Steve on this one, and I'm especially against Ubuntu!  I don't write code but I'm sufficiently computer literate that I usually end up fixing other peoples problems, installing networks, and building the occasional machine. I recently bought a Dell Mini 9 which came with Ubuntu preloaded, but I had to remove it because it couldn't reliably cope with a WEP-PSK password of more than six characters (I think sixty nine is the standard max). Dell's Ubuntu support insisted it was a hardware problem, so I ended up replacing virtually the entire machine piece by piece as Dell sent it to me, each time with same negative result. I ended getting an entirely new machine sent to me, on which I installed XP (after learning how to install it from a USB stick as the Mini 9 has no optical drive), and the problem was solved. The whole experience caused me to do a lot of research on Ubuntu, which convinced me that I'd rather play ball with a rabid pitbull than try and install and use Ubuntu for anything practical. As a hobby it's fine, but trying to find operational drivers for any but the most common items of hardware is a complete waste of time.

Replying to: mac24 (Oct 11, 2009 5:37 am) Possibly because God looks after fools & drunks, my Ubuntu experiences have been uniformly good. (I know that brains & good looks have nothing to with it.) At the beginning of the summer, I bought a cheap Asus netbook (the 1000HE) for casual use while swilling beer on the back deck. The Asus shipped with WinXP, but I decided to repartition it & install Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix - partly because I didn't want to spend money on AV software but mainly to satisfy my curiosity. The installation took a bit over an hour & went smoothly. Ubuntu accepted my 20-character WPA-PSK password without protest & immediately connected to my network. During the 4 months I've had the Asus, I've booted into XP only twice - primarily to download & apply any new updates. Netbook Remix runs like a champ on this machine, & I've had no network issues. (Funny thing - I've found that the fastest & most responsive browser for my Asus is Opera. Much snappier than Firefox.) Still, I'll admit that Ubuntu's wireless network connectivity is still rough around the edges & needs more work. It works on most notebooks, but when it doesn't, it's a nightmare. What happened to you shouldn't happen to anyone. All I can say to you is wait a couple of years & try it again. When it comes to operating systems, I'm a best-tool-for-the-job guy. My main box runs Windows, while the Dell, which runs Ubuntu, has been our music server for the past 3+ years. Meanwhile, my wife, who's an avid photographer, uses (& loves) an iMac.

I'm a Windows user rather than a Windows fan, but because I'm so used to it I find setting it up and solving its problems fairly intuitive. It also helps that because of the enormous user base there is so much in the way of software, drivers, and information readily available. However, I understand Linux to be a much more stable OS, and it probably really excels in a fixed application like a server, phone system, or media server. I'm currently thinking about putting together a wireless HD PVR with an ATSC tuner and internet access for streaming Netflix/YouTube etc. It's the thought of finding the appropriate drivers that worries me, rather than the OS itself. |

Since there doesn't seem to be any other forum to post this in, and this is an active forum: 1 - There is no way to access the forums from the new InsideLine front page, but there was on the the old front page 2 - I tried to post a comment on the Chrysler speeding up redesigns article and even though I was signed in, it said I needed to register (?!) Where are we supposed to put feedback about the site and its design/problems?

And there have been some registration bugs so I'll cc this over for review. I was unable to post on Straightline for several days and tweaks two days ago fixed it for me. What browser and OS are you using?

Replying to: steve_ (Oct 14, 2009 9:57 pm) I'm using XP and Firefox. There seems to be a login problem. I'm logged in (I'm obviously posting right now). When I go to the blogs on the new Inside Line (in the example, the Chrysler speeding up design time article) and try to comment, I have a problem. When I'm reading the blog the top of the page has a "sign out" option, indicating that I am in fact signed in.When I type the comment and hit Submit, I get a message saying that I need to register. And at that point the top of the page option is "sign in", which now means that I'm not signed it! The other item I mentioned was a link to the forums on the front page of InsideLine, like on the old page. I used the InsideLine forums link because the presentation of the topics is different than the CarSpace presentation, and I like the InsideLine presentation better. If you eventually phase out the old InsideLine front page, then I'll have to access the forums via the CarSpace page unless the link is added to the new InsideLine front page.

When InsideLine was formed, I would go to IL and read the latest reviews and news, then head to the forums. So my visit to the Edmunds family of sites (and what keeps bringing me back) is something like "read news and reviews">>go to forums. So I like the pages to enhance that sequence of activities. Regarding the Forums page on CS vs. IL, on IL there is a topic "browse discussions by message board" and it has an item for "Automotive News". When I pick that link it shows a long list of topics, and it is generally sorted by date descending. I like to read/comment on a number of those forums and this is a convenient way to see where new messages have been posted recently. On the CS forums link you have to go to "Forums by Theme", then choose "Automotive news and views" and you get to the same place as above, it just takes more scrolling and an extra click. Since I'm going first to IL anyway, without a forums link I would have to back up to Edmunds and then choose Forums, and then do an extra click to get to where I want to go. So my old sequence was IL main page>> read articles>>click forums>>News and Views>> pick forums to read/post The new sequence would be IL main page>> read articles>>go back to Edmunds or Carspace>>click forums>>choose forums by theme>>Auto News Forums>>Auto News and Views>>pick forums to read/post. You can see that the new situation is a lot more inefficient to access. Hope that is clear, you might need to follow it through the process. Of course I don't know how many others might do it in this way, but I would suspect that a lot of people who want to read auto news would want to participate in the forums. Would there be an alternative suggestion you would have for similar efficiency if the IL forums link is not present?
