Replying to: steve_ (Oct 09, 2009 10:43 am) I am only in one chat room and it is on Edmunds. So, if I were to try others, I might have a problem there too. I have Windows XP 2003 (I think). I bought this computer from Dell in January of 2004 so I doubt I have pirate software. As for IE, I'm pretty sure it is 8.0. Microsoft has a virus program out that is fast and seems to work ok (I never had much luck with McAfee stuff). I will try that when I get home. I've heard more than one person comment on their dislike of McAfee. Or uninstall McAfee and start over with a fresh install. I'm not sure how I can re-install it if I un-install it. Or rollback your computer with System Restore. That might work if I knew how to do that and only if I wouldn't kill something else. Thanks for your quick reply. jmonroe

Then click on All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / Restore my computer to an earlier time At this point, you'll see a calendar. Select a date that's earlier than the onset of your problems. BTW, I'll echo those who blame McAfee. I abandoned it in favor of Norton, even though my employer's global license entitled me to a free copy. Truly, it is a dog's breakfast.

Replying to: jimbres (Oct 09, 2009 5:53 pm) I'm at home and I'm posting. Thanks Jim, that did it. BTW, that's my name too. I guess you can say us Jim's stick together. Thanks everyone for your help. This place ain't too bad. Now I'm headed over to SFTSFL. I've got to settle some things with a few of the guys over there who were mouthing off because they knew I couldn't get to them 24/7. Thanks again, jmonroe |

Replying to: jmonroe (Oct 09, 2009 6:51 pm) IMO, computer problems are more maddening than car problems.

Then I began hearing good things about another operating system: Ubuntu Linux. Curious, I downloaded a copy, burned it to a CD & took it for a test drive. (You can try Ubuntu on your PC without installing it to your hard drive.) Liked it so much that I went ahead & installed it. That was over 3 1/2 years ago, & I've had absolutely no problems with it. Ubuntu Linux is easy to install, easy to use & easy to maintain. It's also free. That's right - there's nothing to buy & no need to spend money on security packages like McAfee (which I hate almost as much as I do Osama Bin Laden). The excellent Firefox browser is included in the distro (installation package), & you can install tons of useful (& free!) software. Ubuntu won't work for you if there are Windows-only programs that you can't live without, but it's ideal for general purpose word processing, web browsing & e-mail use. It's also perfect for middle-aged or elderly machines that don't have the juice to run the latest version of Windows but that aren't yet ready to be scrapped. And it's free. You should check it out.

Replying to: jimbres (Oct 10, 2009 5:55 am) I beg to differ about Linux. It's an awful option for the casual user who just wants to get online. Just trying to hunt down drivers can take hours and hours, and your old printer or whatever still may never work. Windows (or OS X) just works, and finds and install all your hardware. I do a lot of editing and Firefox doesn't support the insert key, which makes it unusable for me. How idiotic is that? Maybe they'll figure it out in this new version?
