Answers is an attractive option for people who don't want to be in a discussion but want a quick Q&A. Some people are into that, others are into discussions and some are into both.

We see a number of members who were active in Forums spending a large amount of time in the blogs commenting.

It used to be Forums was the only place to have social interaction Edmunds. We've added more tools/places so you will see some people gravitate to tools they enjoy more than others. It doesn't make any one of them better or worse.

Login: Firefox works, IE doesn't by backy

Anyone know why I can log in to the Forums fine from Firefox 3.5.1, but when I try to log in from IE 8.0 the login dialog box just sits there and I can't log in? This seems to be a recent behavior. I was able to log in from IE 8.0 until a couple of days ago.

Try it in compatibility view mode and see if that helps. There's a button, but you can also find it under Tools.

I'm using IE8 that way to log on here.

We know of one IE8 bug where the "hot area" on the blue "Sign In" button doesn't cover the whole area of the button. If you're using either the full-page login form or the popup login form (from the yellow "signin" chicklet button) can you try clicking on different spots on the blue "Sign In" button? (particularly the top 1/4)

Or if you're trying to sign in using the form on the righthand side of the Forums, let us know -- we don't know of any bugs with that at present.

Thanks for the report!

I've had Tools > In Private Filtering mess things up on other sites but that mostly zaps ads. I don't think I've tried In Private browsing here. Easy stuff to test at least.

I am trying to sign in using the Sign In URL from this page:

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/ForumsLanding

Then a popup window appears. I enter my ID and password, check "remember me on this computer", and press the red Sign In button (when the cursor floats over it, a hand appears as if the control is active). When I press on it, it looks like it's activated but nothing happens.

While I'm at it (maybe should open a different thread for this), anyone know why when I'm in Firefox and I use one of the text enhancement buttons like "I" for italics, it puts the first "i" at the very end of my text block, NOT at the start of the text I highlighted? I have to copy and paste that "i" with the brackets to where I want it, place the cursor at the end of the block I want to italicize, then press the "I" button (now red) again, and the ending "/i" with brackets is placed correctly. Does the same thing with Bold etc. Works fine in IE. I have noticed this for some time with Firefox--not just the latest 3.5.1 release.

I can answer (or rather give you a workaround for) the second question - you need a space at the beginning of the highlighted text for that to behave correctly.

This issue only shows up if you are trying to italicize the beginning text of your post by highlighting and using a formatting button. If you use highlighting and a formatting button later in the post, it works as it should.

Thanks, that worked (as you can see).

Edmunds Crashes Firefox by pschiffe

Every time I click on My Watched Items I get a pop-up "QuickTime Failed to initialize. Error #0. Please make sure QuickTime is properly installed on this computer." When I click on [OK] my Firefox browser crashes. This happens every time and I've been on this forum for years, but this behavior is new; within the last week or so. What's up with this? Anybody else experiencing this phenomenon? I *do* have the latest QuickTime add-on for Firefox installed.
