For some, like me, it just means that we've given up on the Forum functionality.

I agree with your entire post. Unfortunately it's all been said before, and as much notice will be taken now as it was then.
With everything so massively subdivided, the chances of someone searching Google and getting a link to Edmunds are much greater than with the earlier format.
It's all about generating fresh page hits, and more hits equals more advertising dollars.

I still come back to answer questions sporadically, but there's little satisfaction in it now. Previously, answers would generate discussion leading to more questions and more answers.
Now, questions so often seem to come from new users with the attitude "Here's my question (which is often written in unpunctuated, uncapitalized phone text), now gimmie an answer!", then they're gone, with no indication if the answer helped or not.

I'm not looking for thanks all the time, but if you don't even know if the work you put in is at all useful then it seems rather pointless. Before the changes the Edmunds forums were a kind of group discussion. Now, Edmunds seems to be perceived as an automotive answering machine that spits out a response to an question.

In fact it just occurred to me why I find so little satisfaction here. It's because I don't learn anything here. On other forums I use, questions turn into discussions which develop further questions and further discussion and further research, which benefits all concerned.

Ok, I now realize I've been driven to repeating the same points, so it's obviously time to go.

You are correct. The offset was not being correctly applied to the "Replying to:" date/time (a local variable was invalidating a global). We'll have a fix out in a few weeks -- thanks!

I was just on the "Mystery Car" forum, and the entire forum has text disappearing on the right margin. Previous to this, the right margin stopped when the various pictures and text ended, but now it appears that the entire right side is blocked with white space.

I'm not sure I concur with you about Google; they follow all links on the pages, so they would have indexed all the pages in either the new or old format.

Your post makes me sad, because I too used to REALLY enjoy the site, learned a lot, and (hopefully) shared my knowledge. I wonder how long it takes for a site to coast to a dead end, where everyone asks questions and no one answers, except maybe the hosts?

Two things:

1. I find it interesting that no Hosts responded to either of our posts.

2. So far as hits go, anyone using Firefox can disable that stuff by using NoScript. It kind of makes me wonder how many people upset by the changes are not allowing the advertising on their browser.

Even though the hosts keep telling members, especially in the Mystery Car discussion, that big photos skew our pages, people continue to do so. Our software can't automagically resize them so we either have to let them roll off the page or delete the whole post.

That's in the FAQ too, if anyone wants to read the directions. (Yeah, I know, dream on).
