You hit the nail right on the head!

I tend to answer a question and provide a link to a discussion or specific post to help support the answer and give them the perfect link/intro into Forums.

as they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

now if you supply no helpful information except a link to the proper forum that has the information they seek...

pat... you still there?

... you'd be better off to prioritize a very strong and powerful search capability for the site.

otherwise the paradigm wastes bandwidth and confuses the site operability and design.

if i beat this drum again, shoot me.

I think you missed the point... at least from my perspective. Rarely does anyone just provide a link to the forums. The vast majority of the answers take care of the issue that the "asker" wants resolved so they don't have to wade through lots of posts or use even a sophisticated search engine. It's a simple process.

I'm not suggesting that a more powerful search offering would be useless for the forums. I just think that the Answers site is a great addition to the community for those who don't want to participate in the forums.

i understand your point - haven't missed it at all; honest.

i just think effort expended to give the site a better search mechanism would have been far more valuable to EVERYONE, and probably would contribute to visitor retention.

not only that, it would open up a revenue stream to Edmunds which I think they are missing out on, but I was unsuccessful making that point years ago. maybe sylvia and sylvia will give it another look.

now, i have to shoot myself.

Then we disagree on both points.... the second one being that you have to shoot yourself!!

How about a "heads up" re Forums maintenance? by backy

I found out today that something was going on with the Forums when I tried, unsuccessfully, several times to post some replies in some discussions, and none of them completed successfully. In each case, after about five minutes I got the typical browser error message that the page was not available. Then I noticed that "Read New Posts" was in an endless loop. A few hours later, things were working again.

When some kind of maintenance is going on in the Forums (and I don't mean the index updates, which only take a few minutes and for which we get a warning when they occur), would it be possible to post a general message on all the Forums entry pages, maybe even in the header on every Forums page, letting us know about the maintenance and that Forums functions like making new posts and viewing new tracked posts could be affected? Then we can choose to come back later, or try to proceed if we want to, but at least we'll know if things don't work it's not something with our PCs or network? That would be much appreciated.

I heard it was a server glitch, not scheduled maintenance.

Actually, when maintenance is scheduled, notices are posted at the top of all Forums pages. If you look back in this topic a little ways, you'll see that there is an ongoing unpredictable issue that has not yet been solved. My guess is that's what happened today.

OK, thanks for the info.

BTW, the reason I thought there was some maintenance being done is that while I was trying to post a reply to another post, a little photo of a car appeared just to the left of the original post, on the Post Reply page. I had not seen that before, so I thought a new feature was being added. I have not seen that little photo since (and didn't see it when I went back and successfully did the reply later).
