3. Look right "Ask the Community" shows recent questions related to the discussion you are in that are awaiting answers over in Edmunds' Answers

Ewww, somehow I knew that was going to happen, because it's not a natural landing point for your long-time contributors, and why should they go there?.

I really feel this method is inconsistent with the rest of the site and what people like myself value. You should be encouraging people to subscribe to the proper forums / threads / tracks / communities / what have you and stay, not gun and run.

BTW, there's not enough of the link title shown to encourage me to bite.

Just one user's opinion.

That's what I thought at first but it really does serve a purpose for those who don't like wading through forums, categories, etc. looking for the right place to post (we've all seen new folks get chastised for posting in the wrong place).

I don't think it was designed for the regulars here because they know where to ask. However, it is a great place for regulars to help answer questions. I've also found myself providing a forum link on occasion if I think there would be lots of info about a subject.... like when someone asks a question about getting a certain deal on the sale or lease of a car. (The Prices Paid Forums are best for those.)

IMHO, it is a great addition to the community pages.

I'm seeing a bit of spill over into the discussions too. Just tonight a LR2 owner went from Answers to a discussion. It's easy to migrate; registering to post a question also lets you post in the forum.

And watch your back Tallman1 - I'm only 5 slots behind you in the all time leaderboard.

You hit the nail right on the head!

I tend to answer a question and provide a link to a discussion or specific post to help support the answer and give them the perfect link/intro into Forums.

as they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

now if you supply no helpful information except a link to the proper forum that has the information they seek...

pat... you still there?

... you'd be better off to prioritize a very strong and powerful search capability for the site.

otherwise the paradigm wastes bandwidth and confuses the site operability and design.

if i beat this drum again, shoot me.

I think you missed the point... at least from my perspective. Rarely does anyone just provide a link to the forums. The vast majority of the answers take care of the issue that the "asker" wants resolved so they don't have to wade through lots of posts or use even a sophisticated search engine. It's a simple process.

I'm not suggesting that a more powerful search offering would be useless for the forums. I just think that the Answers site is a great addition to the community for those who don't want to participate in the forums.

i understand your point - haven't missed it at all; honest.

i just think effort expended to give the site a better search mechanism would have been far more valuable to EVERYONE, and probably would contribute to visitor retention.

not only that, it would open up a revenue stream to Edmunds which I think they are missing out on, but I was unsuccessful making that point years ago. maybe sylvia and sylvia will give it another look.

now, i have to shoot myself.

Then we disagree on both points.... the second one being that you have to shoot yourself!!
