I want to thank everyone who thoughtfully put forth their suggestions and recommendations on how to serve new users while at the same time keeping the community feeling for members who have chosen for this to be their automotive home. Your passion is applauded. In all of the emails and postings there were two points that were clear: 1. You understand why we were looking to do more sub-topics but don't want an unlimited number of sub-topics as it is inconvenient and "breaks" the flow of your community experience. The step of closing the general discussion for the vehicle was "too far" for comfort. 2. While the format we would like to change to is successful at other sites, it is because those sites most likely have been that way since "day 1" so their community of users only knows that style of community experience. That's not the case here. You are accustomed to a specific format. We do want members to be happy and we the Forums to grow. To keep members happy, we are going to re-open the general make/model discussions for each vehicle and will be asking for member support in the area of “where” questions get answered if outside of the general discussion. Also, this may take a few days as we have to enter into each discussion separately to remove the read-only setting. Your patience is appreciated. Because our format is not like that of other systems (a discussion for every question) we are at a disadvantage for new members to navigate where best to ask a question. We'll look for the members to be gracious and helpful as they are most of the time. Between the regular members and Hosts, we can work on helping those newbie's who do locate our Forums by giving them a helping hand in getting their questions posted in the right spot for an answer and hopefully getting swept up in our community experience. Our request to you is quite simple – if a user is in the main discussion and starts asking about pricing and dealers, etc., please be helpful and direct that user to the Prices Paid discussion for the vehicle rather than answering and in essence, creating two places where people are talking about pricing and buying experiences. The same can be said for a mechanical question or any other topic where we have a specific area set aside for the sub-topic. We won’t have just one discussion for each vehicle with everything in it (the old Well Engaged days). We will have the main vehicle discussion – ala BMW 5-Series - and will keep separate discussions for pricing, leasing, accessories and a handful of other subjects. Multi-generational vehicles (e.g. Honda Accord, BMW’s, Wrangler) will have separate P&S-type discussions for the generation. We’re going to work with a few different groups to see what works for them and if we find something that will work across all areas – even better. Because it is extremely time consuming and disruptive, there will be inconsistency between various areas while we play around with some different options. We would like to continue the practice of creating new main vehicle discussions with major redesign years. Example - Honda Odyssey 1999-2004, Honda Odyssey 2005+ . This avoids the issue of having one general make/model discussion lasting 6 years and being 40,000 posts long. Bottom line is we do want members to be happy and we want to grow the Forums. Those don't have to be at odds with each other. Enjoy what’s left of the weekend and let’s have a good week. |

I'm back. I doubt I am the only one. I had quit posting and intended to stay that way. This was the ONLY forum I was monitoring. Thanks for listening. Edmunds almost always does, though it sometimes takes a while

Replying to: Sylvia (Nov 12, 2006 2:43 pm) I think we could all tell in the past when a topic needed to be spun off a general discussion -- bluetooth is my favourite candidate, but there were several others. Maybe we can serve both general & specific interests/needs in the future with the model you've described. I certainly hope so.

Replying to: Sylvia (Nov 12, 2006 2:43 pm) I think you finally nailed it. The "general" topic is very appealing as far as building community. I like the sub-forums the way they are now, but really missed the general discussions. All we have to do is make sure a new poster is directed to the proper place to ask their question - not too much at all to ask. Thanks |

| How about the Problems and Solutions thread? That one covered Elantra's prior to 2001 as well. I don't see why it cannot be continued. The history was useful for searches on specific problems. | |
