Very nice post mac! And I couldn't agree more. Fewer threads means more aggregation, more utility for online searches, and better value to participants. In short, a better experience all around.

Like most everything else, a little thought and planning goes a long way.... Although only time will tell if the superb community feel of the original Jeep Wrangler forum can / will ever be replicated.

Frank,

An excellent post - especially the last 2 paragraphs. Exactly what I have been thinking.

I used to hang out a lot in the general BMW 3-series forums, for example, and got to "know" a lot of the people there and have actually communicated by email with a few of them from time to time, but am unable to find them anymore. Those forums are now Read Only.

If I want to know something specifically, such as Oil Questions, I guess the new format is OK assuming anyone is there to answer the question, but the sense of "Community" seems to have disappeared. Building Community is what keeps people coming back.

I don't get why the HELM thread had to be closed and then a similar thread is opened to cover the same brands and cars. There is virtually no difference between the two threads, same people, same topics same discussion. Why would a thread about different marques need to be closed and re-opened as the same thing? Just because there were 20K+ posts in the other thread? If a person wanted specific information on a specific car they now have a jillion threads in which to ask about a specific car right? Why does a open discussion need to be so tightly focused on this or that?

There are no threads for anyone to ask general questions about a specific model anymore. Posts that don't talk about "styling" are removed from a thread and now the only thread we had in which to actually have a "conversation" is gone only to be replaced by the same thing with more "structure", i.e. to make it boring.

Merc, I've explained in several posts in several places why the High End Luxury Marques discussion was closed. Focus is the primary reason. The new place we have is much better defined - all we need to do is stick to the high end vehicles. You know as well as I do that we weren't doing that in the discussion that is now closed.

Also 20,000 plus posts is very daunting to any new member looking to join in a conversation about any given subject. And then there's the thing about "marques" - how can we expect new folks to know what we mean by that when we don't even know, remember that conversation?

The new place is well defined, clean and fresh. We'll keep it that way with your help.

Please don't overlook the fact that you can create a discussion anywhere about anything that interests you. We're not telling you that you can't talk about what you want, far from it. If you need help let me or any host know. We'll be glad to create whatever interests you.

Pat you don't think the new discussion will wind up the same way? I mean the posts there now are all over the place, SUVs, sports cars, etc. The flow of the conversation is the same as before people who like to discuss luxury cars/brands are going to want to discuss other things from time to time. As far as the 20K posts of the old thread, I don't think anyone would try to go back and read all of those. I think they'd just come in post what they want to know and see if anyone bites. I don't get this focused thing when it is supposed to be a free-flowing thread about luxury marques. What happens when this thread strays or has too many posts? Its appears to be the same thing to me Pat.

No, it won't end up the same way. We have a clearly defined topic that we did not have before. For wandering off-topic musings we have the Luxury Lounge as well as all the other topical discussions throughout the Forums.

IMO, the "marques" part of the title of the other discussion and the confusion over that definition is what created the difficulties in staying focused. We now have a discussion that is clearly titled and defined as a conversation about the high end cars made by the luxury manufacturers. Period. No Camrys allowed.

How could I not be interested? Heck, some of these names have been in here since inception. We've celebrated marriages, babies, new jobs and mourned with members over personal losses.

I never thought of a Jeep dating site... a friend of mine was the founder of Match.com,,, maybe there's a business there.

Many new users mainly find us from the search engines and search engines index the discussion link... so if you get a match on post #800 and the discussion is now on post #12,499 - the user will get to the discussion at the last page of the discussion and not post 800 that has their match. This is how the search engines work. The only way to guarantee the match would be to go to a one-post per page system so that each and every post was indexed on its own page. By having discussions that are more descriptive and specific - transmission problems, etc. at least the person doesn't feel like they have landed on the moon.

Because posts are distributed it is what you say - we're holding strong on numbers, just morale is low.

More in a few as I work towards answering more questions...

Pat,

You know, I agree with Merc1 on this. I don't think the unfocused nature of the old forum was really due to the title. It was due to the people, and how they want to interact. The regulars on the forum are folks that have a common interest (high end cars) but like to "socialize" by on occaision talking about other things. Some don't care when the talk turns to projection TVs or whatnot, but it is very easy in such an instance for the reader to not go beyond the first sentence of the post.

What Edmunds management is doing is in essence sponsoring a party, labeling one room HELC or whatever....some folk congregate there and socialize, but then if they want to talk about football or whatnot they are asked to move to another room.

I for one don't see what is so awful about having a forum that is unfocused. Having a title but allowing people to detour from it if that's what they want to do. There are plenty of other, focused threads that they can turn to if they want.
