Replying to: p0926 (Nov 08, 2006 4:20 pm) An excellent post - especially the last 2 paragraphs. Exactly what I have been thinking. I used to hang out a lot in the general BMW 3-series forums, for example, and got to "know" a lot of the people there and have actually communicated by email with a few of them from time to time, but am unable to find them anymore. Those forums are now Read Only. If I want to know something specifically, such as Oil Questions, I guess the new format is OK assuming anyone is there to answer the question, but the sense of "Community" seems to have disappeared. Building Community is what keeps people coming back. |

I don't get why the HELM thread had to be closed and then a similar thread is opened to cover the same brands and cars. There is virtually no difference between the two threads, same people, same topics same discussion. Why would a thread about different marques need to be closed and re-opened as the same thing? Just because there were 20K+ posts in the other thread? If a person wanted specific information on a specific car they now have a jillion threads in which to ask about a specific car right? Why does a open discussion need to be so tightly focused on this or that? There are no threads for anyone to ask general questions about a specific model anymore. Posts that don't talk about "styling" are removed from a thread and now the only thread we had in which to actually have a "conversation" is gone only to be replaced by the same thing with more "structure", i.e. to make it boring. Replying to: merc1 (Nov 12, 2006 10:49 am) Also 20,000 plus posts is very daunting to any new member looking to join in a conversation about any given subject. And then there's the thing about "marques" - how can we expect new folks to know what we mean by that when we don't even know, remember that conversation? The new place is well defined, clean and fresh. We'll keep it that way with your help. Please don't overlook the fact that you can create a discussion anywhere about anything that interests you. We're not telling you that you can't talk about what you want, far from it. If you need help let me or any host know. We'll be glad to create whatever interests you.

Replying to: merc1 (Nov 12, 2006 11:41 am) IMO, the "marques" part of the title of the other discussion and the confusion over that definition is what created the difficulties in staying focused. We now have a discussion that is clearly titled and defined as a conversation about the high end cars made by the luxury manufacturers. Period. No Camrys allowed. |

Replying to: merc1 (Nov 12, 2006 11:41 am) You know, I agree with Merc1 on this. I don't think the unfocused nature of the old forum was really due to the title. It was due to the people, and how they want to interact. The regulars on the forum are folks that have a common interest (high end cars) but like to "socialize" by on occaision talking about other things. Some don't care when the talk turns to projection TVs or whatnot, but it is very easy in such an instance for the reader to not go beyond the first sentence of the post. What Edmunds management is doing is in essence sponsoring a party, labeling one room HELC or whatever....some folk congregate there and socialize, but then if they want to talk about football or whatnot they are asked to move to another room. I for one don't see what is so awful about having a forum that is unfocused. Having a title but allowing people to detour from it if that's what they want to do. There are plenty of other, focused threads that they can turn to if they want. |
