interesting because other people (like myself) never use what was "Read Subscriptions", but instead used "Message Center".

i agree on the human factors issue: if you change the location of an affordance, you're likely to cause problems when people initially can't find the new location, or because they are familiar with the old location, activate a function that may have taken it's place.

Yes, "My Tracked 'Items'" is a confusing change and the wording seems smarmy.

Imagine tracking developments on your favorite vehicle or vehicles, or reports by a particular contributor or contributors, or postings by a particular member or members, etc. Imagine that this content which you are interested in may exist at Edmunds, in a Featured Article, a Road Test, regular Columns, or Forums, etc.

You want to go searching for the stuff each and every time, or would you rather prefer to tell the site: "this is the stuff I want to read, remember my preferences, and serve it up to me conveniently please".

I'm thinking they are setting us up for some real neat functionality to come.

While they aren't spelling out their future plans in gorey detail, they do seem to be telegraphing these goodies...

I like it - tracks fit into an auto theme nicely. Makes for fun word play.

How about calling them something descriptive like "discussions" or "message boards" rather than "items?"
What is an item? That is ultra vague.

Subscribing was more clear than tracking, but I suppose they could also call it "saving" or "following."
Follow this discussion.
Save this message board to the Message Center etc..

Without getting too "gory" , the term "items" encompasses more than just discussions.

I don't care one way or the other about the actual wording. My problem is that i keep hitting "remove track" because it used to say "Read Subscriptions" in that same area. Heck, even worse, its still 2 words and starts with R.

but, whatever, i'm sure i'll stop hitting it sooner or later and get used to the new location ... just in time for it to change again, i'm sure.

Hmmm - will look at the order at the bottom and try to put Read New Posts furthest left.

As for the name change - Karen is correct in that items is allowing you to track more than a discussion AND if you look in My Tracked Items it shows you not just discussions but also any messages that you have bookmarked.

Message Center - many, many, many people complained or were confused as they thought this is where they go to get messages (like emails or IMs). We carefully weighed all of the support email from the past years and looked at what the majority of people had issues with.
