#1627 of 2014 2004 Ford Focus SE with PZEV
May 29, 2004 (5:01 am)
I recently purchased a 2004 Ford Focus SE with the PZEV engine. I had a 2000 Focus Wagon with the 2.0 liter engine as a company car and like the FOcus but hated the 2.0 engine. This new car with the PZEV engine is fantastic! What a difference! It is so much more powerful and the handling is superb. It is so cool to be able to drive an economy compact that has zip and is fun to drive.
I have only 750 miles on it, but it is by far, one of the best cars I have ever owned. Considering the generous rebate Ford is offering on the 2004 Focus, you would do well to consider this car. I absolutely love it!
#1628 of 2014 2.0 in 05 is a new engine also

Just so you are aware, the "Duratec 20" standard in the 05 is not related in any way to the prior 2.0 SPI which was carried over from the Escort or the 2.0 "Zetec" which started life europe.
This engine is not "unproven" it comes from Ford's new worldwide family of 4 cylinder engines. There are 3. 1.8, 2.0, and 2.3. These engines started out in Europe with Mazda1 Demio replacement and the Mazda6.
Thats right, Mazda got a blank check from Ford to design the best 4 cylinder engines in the world.
In the US, Mazda is using the 2.0 and 2.3 versions with continous valve timeing in the Mazda3 and Mazda6.
One great point about these engines, is they use a timing chain instead of a timing belt.
SO if anyone out there had a bad experience with any of the old Focus engines, those engines are gond and the new ones are much better.
On a different note, I HATE that its almost impossible to find a Focus with ABS and Side Airbags.
IF these are features you have to have, go look at a Mazda3, (the new Focus in Europe is based in the same chassis as is the new Volvo S40.

#1632 of 2014 Side Air Bags - 2003 models
Jun 04, 2004 (10:01 am)
Am looking at purchasing a used ZTS, 2003 model. It's loaded, leather, sun roof, etc. Can anyone tell me if this vintage had the side airbags available and if so, how I might be able to tell if they are there?

if the SABs are there, you will see a small fabric tag on the outside seam of the front seatbacks.

Thanks for the fast feedback!
Can you tell me if the airbags are like the side curtains we hear about which come out of the ceiling? Are they more "body restraints" that come out of the seats? I guess what I'm getting at, would these SABs protect the head as well as the torso in a side impact?
Jun 04, 2004 (11:17 am)
they are torso only.
very few small cars come with side curtains, and none before 2004. the 2005 focus has them available, but only on the ST trim.
