alternator issues by billcarson

i just purchased a 2001 intrigue with 44k miles and love the power and handling of this vehicle.after 2weeks it started leaving a puddle of antifreeze under the water pump area.i poked around but could only determine it was not from the manifolds or the water pump.the dealer made the repair and said it was the timing case seal (gasket).his mechanic replaced the gasket but he called me to say it was still leaking.(blamed a chineese gasket).had to wait till monday to get the real part from the dealer.i picked up the car yesterday after a 5 day stay at the mechanic.(they wanted to watch it while pressureized).after reading all the threads on the problems of getting all the air out when the water pump or related parts are drained,i expressed my concern to the dealer in this regard.he told me his mechanic pulls a vacuum in the system and draws in the fresh antifreeze to level.the car has been tested (by me on the highway)and the job was done perfectly,no banging burbling or temp fluctuation issues.i don't know if this is a new method of filling the system but thought you all might want to know. also as a side note, i have read of all the alternator problems you guy's have been having and noticed that the alternator was located so close to the thermostat housing that the slightest weep will end up in the windings.this is a terrible design.also ther is a cardboard composite shield that if missing or misplaced, water splashed from below will enter the alternator.hope this can help someone as i am still learning about this car.

Can anyone tell me the procedure for replacing a front bearing on my 2002 oldsmobile intrigue? Can this be done at home? I have tools and experience working on cars. Is there anything special I should know or should I take it to a shop?

hi , its not hard, just have to take brakes and brake rotor off to see it. I had to get extra bolts for mine, because some smart mechanic forgot to put in all the bolts and left 1 out on each side before i got the car. pretty easy, just have to remember to tighten down to the proper torque. "here's the link to a video on a impala, but they are all pretty much the same.... good luck and you should be fine!!!!

oakhill2 i just replaced both rear bearings on my 92 lesabre in january(26deg howling wind)so it seemed worse than it really is.the first suprise was the 50mm torx bolts securing the hub assembly.after a trip to the auto store i was on my way.after all those years in place they were rusted on very well.i had to bang the abs cap to disintigration to finally get to solid material that allowed me to pry them out.its a very simple job if they are not stuck too badly.good luck and let us know how you made out. p. s. my 2001 intrigue is my good car (thats were i'm at)

i want to thank dtownfb for the detailed instructions on the removal of the ignition cylinder and switch assembly.you really might want to think about writing a manual for these forgotton vehicles as you put in exactly what was experienced by the do it youselfer on the other end.my problem was the ignition cylinder it self and i had to perform the relearn procedure 3 times before the car would start.and by the way the starter would not engage untill i cleared the security fault.thanks again.. bill carson

No problem Bill. I stole those from another forum I participate in. I changed my ignition switch about a year ago. The best part is you can use those directions to change other things in the dashboard .

Glad it worked for you.

Another one gone by dtownfb

After months of debating, I finally pulled the trigger and replaced my 2000 Olds Intrigue. I bought it used with 61,000 miles and it had 178,430 miles on it when I traded it in. The last couple of years have been somewhat frustrating but I still think it was GM's best sedan offering at the time (not including Cadillac). I bought a 2006 Toyota Camry. Boring? Yes! But at this stage in my life, I need boring and reliable.

Thank you to all of you who have helped me over the years. I wish you the best of luck with your Intrigue.

Changing out the filters for a friend on a 98 Old Intrigue. Took the engine cover off, stared at the engine and cannot find the PVC valve. Looked in all the usual places. Where did they hide it?
