Now that you mention it, last summer we traveled for a month all the way from TX to NC, through AL and FL and then through MO and AK. We took our Intrigue with 90000mls and put 6000mls on it. It went smoothly and delivered excellent mileage with 4 people on board: up to 35MPG, never less than 30MPG with gas (we did get 25MPG with E15 once )! After we got home, we gave it new motor oil, new tires and a good clean up. It's the least we can do for a job well done.

The SES light comes on, but goes off again, which it has done since we brought it home from the dealer in '99. I changed the crankshaft sensor a few years ago because of hard starting. Really the missing is the only issue with the car. Sometimes it will miss really badly for about 1/4 of a mile, the SES light will flash, but then it will hit on all 6 and run great. It seems to be worse right in the morning on the first start. On a hill with the cruise set I can feel it miss and surge a little.

Get your car scanned with an OBD II reader. You probably have a code stored if the SES light flashed on then went off. That should begin to tell you what may be going on. I've had that happen to me and had to replace the MAF sensor.

Independent repair shop has repalced pump three times already and again it has failed. They claim water is getting into the pump and causes it to fail. The Intrigue has be to the car wash about every 60 days and it has only rained once, we live in Arizona. They added a part per technical bulletin MIL ON/DTC P0410 Set. Still claim water in the pump. We are not loosing coolant or washer fluid.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hesitation / Flutter problem and Reduced Gas Mileage

Recently my intrigue has been having this hesitation/flutter problem. I'm accelerating slowly/moderately and then the acceleration will sort of pulse for a few seconds, and the RPMs will bounce up and down a few hundred as it pulses and then it will continue accelerating normally.
Also, a month or so before this started (possibly unrelated) my gas mileage dropped about 3 mpg or so (same driving conditions, etc). I changed my fuel filter when I got the car, my tire pressure is correct, I'm now showing any error codes, my alignment is correct, my air filter is good, my spark plugs are good, recently had my oil changed, made sure they put in 5w-30, recently put in fuel injector cleaner (slight mpg improvement).
I've had my Intrigue since it had 98,000 miles about 16months ago. I currently have 138,000 miles

My car was doing sort of the same thing. I was on the 4-lane one day and it wouldn't go over 50 mpg. Then at times, no problems at all. We were puzzled and had the spark plugs, gas filter, oxygen sensor, crankshaft sensor and catalytic converter changed. After guessing for months and having it put on 3 different machines, we took it to hometown garage. They had to dig to find it, but it is cured. It was the mass airflow sensor. You might want to have this checked. Hope it works for you as well

Just a quick note, after 8 1/2 years with my Intrigue and on this forum, I am saying goodbye to my 2000 Intrigue GL this week. It's been a great 135K over all, I am really going to miss it. Given I only got $3500 for it, I probably would have kept it if I had the room to park it somewhere.
The car easily passed inspection yesterday, no major repairs over the 8 1/2 years. I had to lube the intermediate shaft twice (once under warranty), replaced 2 brake lines that rusted and I had a control arm break. Aside from that it was just brakes and service.
I am about to pull the trigger on a Malibu LT2 with a 3.6L, moonroof and the top line stereo.
I will pop my head in here still every now and again because I love Intrigues but in the end I wanted a new car and it was time for change. I'm sure my Intrigue has many good years ahead and the buyer is a young 23 year old starting off a career. Surprise!

I just purchased a used 98 oldsmobile intrigue with a little over 130,000 miles on it. The car was fine for the first two weeks or so. Now its seems likes everything is starting to go wrong. When i crank the engine it acts like it doesnt want to start. I was told a new starter was just put on it. It jerks sometimes as im driving. Theres a hissing noise coming from under the car that just started today. And when i got in my car yesterday there was a puddle of water on the floor on the passenger side as if it had flooded. But the water wasn't anywhere else. What could these problems be stemming from? Please help.

Hi, I have a goldbaby01 with 164,000 miles and i have a couple of posts here with some maintenance instructions. I really should put more up since i have done a few things already with mine. yours sounds like a couple of things going on. first with the hesitation, could be the crank sensor. Is the check engine light or ses? (service engine soon) If on see if you can go to a autoparts and get it scanned for free. Here in NY you can go to autozone for a free checkup. next the hissing sound could be a vacuum line loose or the air pump on the drivers side defective? also should give you a code if air pump. I just replaced mine, myself, (take the drivers side headlight out and you will see it just behind the bumper. . The water problem could be a clogged a/c line or heater core leaking. You will have to check to see where the water comes from. Not sure if handy enough to do check these things, but at least you have a general idea. email me if you have any other questions. again, I should realize you have a 98' and i have a 2001, may be a lil different, but all in all good car.

To add to dieselissy post, if there is no check engine light on, it is most likely your ignition switch. The ignition switch can cause the problems you are experiencing. I replaced mine a few months ago. I experienced hard starting, stalling and flashing "security" light. That was fun. I posted instructions on how to do it.
If it has not rained then the likely culprit is a clogged AC drain. If it has rained then the leak is most likely coming through the cabin air filter.
