If you use regular unleaded, you get lower performance and lower fuel economy. Using premium pays for itself, because even if it is about 20cents more per gallon, you may see 10% improvement in fuel economy.

10% improved fuel economy?!?! in which universe did they change the laws of physics?!?!

you would be lucky to get a whole mile to the gallon better. in many cases, people get worse mileage with premium.

That is true. My gas mileage went down when I switched to premium gas. I'm back to using regular gas, 87 Octane. No problems at all with this grade. I have 48,000 miles on my 02 GLE so far and still running great on regular gas.

Pls confirm that you've been using regular (87 octane) gas for most of 48000 miles with no problems? What is your fuel economy like? BTW, the onboard trip computer MPG on my 03 Max is off by 2-3 mpg consistently...

You are not alone regarding the onboard "trip" computer. Mine has never been right (02 SE with 37200+ miles).

When I purchased the car in March of 2002, I used regular gas for about 2 months and then switched to premium. This is when I noticed the difference between the two gas types. Ever since I have been using regular gas. I get around 25 - 27 mpg driving mostly in the city. I don't use the trip computer to get my mileage. I keep track each time I purchase gas to determine my mileage. The trip computer is good for checking outside temperature, not gas mileage.
