My wife has an '04 Lexus RX330, and she would prefer something more "sophisticated" next year.
We were thinking of the Audi Q7- I am a loyal Audi fan, and I'm not saying no to that until I see it at the Chicago Auto Show this week.
But, it would be a little odd if we had three Audis in the household, would it not? (I own an S4 Cabriolet, and for an extra car I have an A3 2.0T FronTrak) We also don't really need an SUV because of the A3's ample trunk.
So, I was thinking of going Mercedes-Benz for her.
The CLS is gorgeous, but it's overpriced and doesn't have enough space in the back for my 13 year old son. The E-Class may be the perfect balance of room, luxury, and performance for both my wife and I to drive comfortably.
Any engine suggestions? I hear that the E350 is good enough to brush the E500 off the list, but I'd like to make sure.
#6394 of 6720 A Question
Feb 07, 2006 (8:22 am)
Would you E-Class buyers consider a E280 is Mercedes offered it here. BMW has the 525/530/550, but Mercedes only has the E350 and E500. The E280 has the same engine as the C280, a 3L V6 with 228hp, essentially more power than last year's E320, but with a less torque. Would you consider an E280 if it were priced at say 43-44K?

Very good question. If the rated MPG were 2 better in the city, I'd do it. But since MB would most likely also lower the interior luxury/option mix, I would be forced to get the E350. I had to make sure I wouldn't miss any of the E500 extras before ordering the E350. I would have liked the air suspension, but that was about it.

The V6 is plenty good enough. Get the E500 if the air suspension is worth $6K to you, but don't get it for the extra HP. What about the 4MATIC? I opt'd against it because it doesn't snow that much in Chicago and I didn't want to loose the 7 speed.

Now I had it for 8 months, below is what I thought:
1. Keyless entry. Worth the money. Save time. Open trunk without key. Provide freedom to hide the keys or wearing them around your neck.
2. Xeon headlights: Has more value in cool-looking, then praticle.
3. Dynamic seat: not worth it. Good for showing off.
4. Navigation: worth it.
5. Premium audio system: I found it sound much better then before. I guess It needs to be broken in.
6. Sunroof package. Worth the money.
7. Tire pressure monitor: Way worth the money! It warned my immediately after a punture.

Yes, I know what you mean: little info about Designo anywhere except the brochures. Dealers here have not seen one. I was intrigued by the paint colors in the brochures- looks different, and I rather liked the color, but again, choked on the $6 grand. I don't think there is any way you would get that money back in resale. Maybe in Beverly Hills or Costa Mesa or some other Rock Star Haven... It is pretty, though, isn't it?

Absolutely try the E320 CDI!! Better mileage, still quiet, nice ride and a LOT MORE TORQUE!! Really fun to drive. These diesels don't puff black smoke, don't smell, and are smooth to drive with amazing "get up and go". I think it is the best of both worlds...
I used to drive an Audi A6. Nice car, but the E320 is better. I do not see any advantage to the E350 over the CDI unless you are afraid of diesel. This is a woman's perspective, however...

There hasn't been a post for 12 days on this topic. Is the E no longer loved? My dealer says my E just left the factory and now they need to find a "vessel". I guess the Queen Mary was not available He didn't give me an ETA. I hope 3 weeks isn't too agressive.
#6401 of 6720 2004 E500 4matic
Feb 25, 2006 (5:04 pm)
I am looking at buying a used e500 4matic with navigation. My question is does the navigation have the regional DVD or the entire USA DVD? I have heard that Mercedes Nav use to do only regional but now they have the entire USA. What year did this practice start? Plus, if you get the new DVD does that mean the older Nav will work with the entire USA or not?
Plus, is $41k a good price for a this car with 43k miles?
Thanks in advance.
#6402 of 6720 Hands Free Kit (MHI)
Feb 28, 2006 (6:47 am)
Has anyone had the MHI kit added by the dealer? I have many questions and hope to know more before I get taken when I ask the dealer.
What should I expect to pay for the MHI kit not including the cradle/phone?
Has anyone used the new MB Bluetooth cradle/adaptor?
For E-Class 2006, does MHI include voice dialing? Does this voice command also control some none phone features?
Is the voice quality outstanding? I don't want my callers to have trouble understanding me. And I need very clear sound since I have trouble hearing to begin with.
On the MB website, it shows dealer add on at $995, but factory price of $1500. Seems like it should be the other way around. I think both prices were w/o phone.
