If I'm not mistaken, that has changed now (beginning March 2001) with MBUSA's new synthetic oil policy. Here's the info (specific oil brands and weights are specified).
As the message states: "Effective immediately, Mercedes Benz ONLY recommends the use of MB approved synthetic motor oil for all vehicle equipped with the Flexible Service Systems (FSS) as of model year 1998."
Hope thie helps!

Perhaps you might wish to consider using Mobil's Delvac 1, 5W40. I have been running this year round without any adverse effects in my e320 wagon. Hope this is of some help.

And, MBZ approved synthetic oils are oils that meet MBZ OEM Specification 229.1, which says ACEA oils meeting A2-96 and A3-96 are acceptable. So said MBUSA upon my inquiry with MBUSA which was after receipt of the 23 March letter with regard to my use of synthetic Redline oil in my 1999 E320. I got a copy of MBZ Sheet 229.1 and 229.3 for Passenger Car Engine Oils.Look for ACEA A2-96 or A3-96 formulated synthetic oils. MBZ said my warrenty would remain valid using FSS with my use of my A3-96 formulated synthetic oil.

#1784 of 6720 CD changer

Thanks for your feedback. Regarding the garager door opener, my salesperson says that if I take the remotes with me, the service folks should be able to program it. I'll see how that goes.
I am taking my 2001 E320 to the dealership tomorrow to have a CD changer installed. This was part of the deal. It's gonna be a trunk-mount. My question to you all is how do you feel about a trunk-mount CD changer? Did you wish you had an in-dash instead? I don't think in-dash is an option for these vehicles. I also don't think installation of a single CD player in-dash is an option.

Unless you have the Command option, an in dash CD is out of the question. You're stuck with the trunk mount.
On the ML, you do have an option (on the 320) of putting in a single in-dash CD player. I had it done on mine, and of course, use it 10x more than the CD changer which never seems to get changed out.

The banging noise that you hear may not be coming from the speaker. More than likely when you go over a sharp bump like a speed bump, the rear head rests will move up off the rest position and then flop back down making a noise. This is probably what you are hearing.

One other oil that is recommended by mercedes is Castrol Syntec. I have used Castrol 5W50 for several years now ever since they came out with the Syntec with execellent results, and it stays in my cars all year long with out changing the viscosity. My cars are driven from the heat of southern calif desert in the summer to the cold winters of the high Sierra's in the winter time with outstanding performance. I mention this as I find that the Castrol Syntec with the proper viscosity seems easier to find than the Mobil 1.
#1788 of 6720 2002 E models & Timeport

I'm planning to purchase the I 320 4Matic within the next few months. I asked the local sales manager about the 2002's: when are they going to be available, will there be any special editions as there has been in the past for last model year and what are the improvements for 2002? I was told the earliest they will take orders is July, the dealer won't see them until August or September, there are no changes/improvements and the only special edition will be for the LS. True?
2d question is on the Timeport phone. Is it a 3 watt a 0.5 watt. The dealer wasn't sure. Also, will it handle AT&I text messaging. I've become very dependent on short messaages from the office that don't interrupt a conversation with client, just a beep and I have a message on my Nokia screen.
#1789 of 6720 Mcaleer: 2002 E Ordering
Jun 08, 2001 (12:26 pm)
I ordered my 2002 over a month ago and got a build date of the first two weeks in June. Delivery is a little uncertain due to the release date allowed by MB. I hear that there will likely be some type of roll out in July with the release of the C Class coupe, and several others. Timing is not certain, however.
The info your dealer is giving you doesn't seem accurate.
Only change for 2002 is a remote trunk release (not even sure where this is). No final word on special release versions or packages but if they do this, it will likely be in Spring 2002 as they wind the factory down for the retooling of the 2003.
