#3778 of 5443 Steering Wheel Problems with 2002 ES300
Jun 10, 2003 (7:54 am)
I have a 2002 ES 300 with NAV/LEV. The car has not been without its problems, but lexus of manhattan has always been aggressive at finding the problem and fixing it (even if it has taken two or three trips) Most problems are minor (rattles, squeeks, windnoise) and the transmission issue of which I am sure that you are all aware -- yet no different from my 2002 Lincoln LS V-8. Maybe it has to due with fuel economy regulations? Here is my new problem. I noticed that the wood steering wheel has turned a purplish color that no longer matches the wood on the dash. At first I thought I was crazy and then two other people brought it to my attention. Is this replacable under waranty? Anyone else have this problem?
#3779 of 5443 1993 ES300 window roll-up problem
Jun 10, 2003 (9:54 pm)
Just discovered that the back left window on my 1993 ES300 will not "roll" up. It is in its lowest position and power is apparently going to it since there is a clicking sound in that door when the lever switch is pulled up in an attempt to close it. 1) Does anyone have a ballpark repair figure for such a problem? 2) Since the Camry is a close relative, is this the sort of problem that a Toyota dealer can service? I have not yet called around since the problem just occurred tonight. Thanks for any input.

I have a 2001 ES. My wood wheel began to crack and Lexus replaced it without hesitation. My guess is they will replace the discolored wheel. Good Luck
#3781 of 5443 wet windows revisited
Jun 11, 2003 (6:56 pm)
Thank you for the input raddboy41, rugmankc, and badgerfan. I do refrain from putting my driver side window down for about 3-4 days after the car has been cleaned or rained on. When I cant avoid putting the window down, and then it goes up, the window is not only wet, but streaky (which reduces my ability to see through to my side mirror). And since you mentioned it, no, the water does not dry up on the window in 1/4mi or so. The typically dirty streaks also adher to the window. I clean the window at the end of the day, only to have it happen the next day if the window must go down, up comes the wet windows with streaking. Will rain-X help?

No it won't. The felt material is staying wet and the material is pressed against the glass. Only two solutions, if either will work, is to replace the felt with a rubber strip, or widen the gap between the felt and window. In either case, I would address it with the dealer. Good Luck.
#3783 of 5443 2002 Transmission Success
Jun 19, 2003 (6:56 pm)
I called Lexus Canada's 800 number and I told them of my lazy transmission and hesitation problems. They contacted by dealer and they ordered a new computer chip that is a temporary fix until the "true fix" comes out in January. Lexus Canada representative made clear to me that this is not a "defect".
The computer part number is "89666-33442 Engine Computer". I had to wait about a week, but the replacement took about 12 minutes.
Thanks akw3 from Canada for the advice from an earlier message. (I think we both bought our ES300's from the same batch at Don Valley in Toronto).

Glad to hear your success with getting the '02/'03 ES transmission issue taken care of! This is the first time I've heard Lexus actually issuing a fix for the transmission. Have the problems dissapeared with the new computer chip?
I was told by a tech that the behavior of the "lazy" transmission was an after-effect of Lexus wanting to meet certain emissions standards (ULEV I believe) with the new ES. Perhaps they consider this fix temporary because it no longer makes the car ULEV-compliant. Not a concern for the car owner, but isn't something that Lexus can roll out as a permanent fix as it would void their claims of the new ES being ULEV-compliant.
That's my guess.
#3786 of 5443 2002 Transmission Success F/U

After 2 days of driving around, there is no hesitation problem and instead of feeling sluggish, the vehicle wants to "go".
The character of the ES300 has been changed by the new computer.
Will continue to provide follow-up.
#3787 of 5443 fix for transmission in 04?
Jun 20, 2003 (11:47 am)
Does anyone know if the new es 300 for '04 will have the transmission fixed?
I love the es 300 but i don't want to buy a lemon. It seems taht both 02 and 03 have had trouble with the transmission, right?
