Ron - well, you've asked the right guy here! I bought a 2002 X-Type and had it for 5 1/2 months, including 28 days in the shop, before dumping it and getting a ES300. I had so many problems with my X-Type and my dealer that I just couldn't take it anymore. Got my ES300 in May and have had virtually no problems with it - not even the transmission problem that has been discussed here. And the Lexus dealer here has been fantastic - a 180 degree turn from the Jag dealer. To see my new ES300, and for a link to what happend with my X-Type, go here:
See my messages on this board - #2716 for the very minor issues I've had with my ES300, and #2698 for my shopping/decision making process in getting the X-Type over the BMW 325xi last year.
For more on X-type issues, in addition to the board here, see http://www.jagtalk.com and http://forums1.roadfly.org/jaguar/forums/xtype/
Go for the ES300 and you won't be disappointed, if it's anything like mine and my dealership! You'll also note that the ES300 has more luxury touches that the X-Type lacks, like memory seats, an in-dash 6 CD changer (it's in the trunk for the X-Type), two cup holders up front, etc. All that, better reliability, and it costs less, too!
The only things I miss about the X-Type are the audio controls on the steering wheel and the back-up warning sensors.
#2918 of 5443 Price of New 2002 ES300 - comment please !

I've got a quote of $32,598 for a new ES300 with
- Premium Package (PM)
- Wood and Leather Steering Wheel (WU)
- Vehicle Skid Control (RF)
- Heated Front Seats (HH)
- All-season Tires (FT, no charge on this)
- High Intensity Headlamps (HL)
- Cargo Net, Wheel Locks, and Trunk Mat.
Guys, what do you think of this price? Please let
me know. I sense that i can knock down a few
hundred bucks more.
As for with Nav and Mark, the quote is $37,883.
Again, one should be able to slash a few hundred
bucks more of this quote.
Comment welcome! 'cause I need to make a decision
before the end of this month. Otherwise price will
be a little higher.
#2919 of 5443 Price of New 2002 ES300 - Update
Jul 29, 2002 (11:13 am)
Just got an updated quote ($31,957) for the 1st
combination I just listed in previous message.
I beleive $31,957 is the exactly invoice price
for this combo.
Question: how much a dealer will make out of
selling a Lexus ES300 an invoice price? $1k?

Not sure about the quote for the premium package, but for the NAV/ML, does it also include the AVS option? If so, you should try to knock down another 1K, at least that is where my purchasing price was.
For your reference, the MSRP for my ES is $39,963.

I still have my first es300 93' w/150k and no problems. So I decided to buy a second 02' for my wife. I S/O starlight pearl/ivory, with everything except avs. 38k out the door. It took 4 months and I wasn't sure I'd like the color, but... The color is awesome, I've had the car two days and have gotten two unsolicited compliments already. Everything else about the car is great as well. The Nav/ML is definately worth it. I'm waiting for the Motorola bluetooth car kit to complete the dream car. Again I can't rave enough about the color though. I'm glad I didn't wait til 03' as the color might become unavailable.

The invoice on the package you mentioned is $32,319. Being able to purchase it for $31,957 is an excellent deal. Are you in southern California?
This makes me wonder what's happening with the ES. I don't think it customary for a nrewly redesigned car to be selling below invoice in its first year.
#2924 of 5443 Price of New 2002 ES300 - To kreativ
Jul 29, 2002 (1:38 pm)
kreativ, I think I was right on this one *$31,957*, not $32,319. Let me break it down:
Following is the invoive price:
Base price=27935; PM=1688; WU=264; RF=520; HH=352; FT=0; HL=512; Dest_Charge=575.
This addes up to $31,846. I could not find invoice price for Cargo Net, Wheel Locks, or Trunk Mat). The MSRP for these 3 small items are (28+41+64)=133. If I assume invoice of $111 out of MSRP $133, I came up with exact $31,957.
So Lexus dealer is not selling below invoice price but invoice price. BTW I am in MA.

Sounds like a great price, Min! My car, purchased in May, is similarly equipped, save for the skid control, and I paid significantly more.
Looks like you are getting a great end-of-model-year deal. I'd jump on it! Just make sure they don't try to jack the price with a bunch of add-ons at closing and you're good-to-go!

Looks like we have a discrepancy in what the base invoice price is. It's an excellent deal either way! Where are you at?
