I just thought of something else-the radio is anti-theft so how will an audio place get the amplifier out in the first place-aren't I at the mercy of BMW like it or not? I cannot believe that BMW told me that they may not be able to get me a replacement amplifier. I mean is 1993 so long ago? I believe they are letting me know that in their opinion it's time to upgrade to a new or recent "pre-owned" BMW.

Of course I would love a new Bimmer but this 1993 325 drives like an absolute dream. It just doesn't have a radio emitting audible sound waves...

No smiles yet. It went to the Service Dept tonight to get the CD changer installed and the PDI (pre-delivery inspection?). It'll be ready tomorrow morning, but I have to wait for soverypoorwife who has soverylongdrive to get home from work before going to get it. Her boss is a BMW (M3) fanatic, though, so he's happily blessing her early departure tomorrow -- 7 p.m. at the dealer is the plan. Then all smiles. Do you have an ETA on yours yet?
vkwheels: Missed you by a day. We finally made it to Irvine MINI Sunday. We took turns driving the Graphite S. That car is smaaaallllll. A kick to drive, though. Very close to giving them $1,000, which moves us from the regular waiting list to the serious waiting list. This would be for a December/January delivery. Big color quandary going on in the household now -- Electric Blue or Yellow -- and even red is starting to make a late charge.

Before I ask a stupid question about performance in the 325xi and 330xi and the reliability of bmw's AWD, is there a decent search feature for this forum? I can't seem to find anything when i search for the term "330xi"....
Thanks everyone!

it's not THAT hard...
the amplifier in the e36 is a separate unit that is VERY easily taken out and replaced...
go to zionsville auto parts, www.zionsvilleautosport.com and fill out a used parts request and they'll get you one... or any number of bmw parts suppliers on the web...
the anti-theft isn't an issue...

When you say performance, I'll assume compared to the non-AWD versions of both cars. The primary penalty is weight and slight car height increase; BMW published 0-60 time of the 325xi is 0.4 sec greater then the 325i. You cannot feel that you have AWD since 62% of the torque goes to the rear wheels -- it feels like a RWD. No bump steer, no increased steering force and no pull to any side during acceleration or coasting.
The AWD drive components are the same used on the X5 and are derived from a early 80's design (badged 325iX). It is as maintenance-free as other parts of the car and I don't anticipate any problems during the car's life.
I saw two posts in this board about people having problems with vibration during acceleration and high speeds but other than those, no other problem reports.
