I haven't check this site in awhile and had fun reading the messages since I leased my 2002 Acura RL in May 2001, which has prompted me to make some general comments. Dollar for dollar, I challenge anyone to find a better value than the RL in its price range. I leased a '97 RL for four years and it was a gem--never a problem and practically no maintence. I was sad to trade it in for a new lease.
The '02 has some nice refinements and I am happy as a lark with it--a real pleasure to drive. It is so quiet and never a rattle or squeak. I have been checking the miles per gallon and it is well below what Acura advertises. I noticed that many others had this complaint. However, I always run my air conditioner and I am certain that it reduces mile per gallon--this must be taken into consideration and I am sure it has probably been overlooked by some of those complaining about it. The only other complaint I have is that the CD changer is in the truck and not in the center armrest (as it was in my '97)--this is a real pain. I would have been happy with a single disc changer in the dash like the TL.
While the stying of the RL is not as slick as BMW and Mercedes, I have still received compliments on how sharp my car looks (charcoal metallic). I could own a BMW or a Mercedes to show off, but I don't like driving a show off car (my ego is healthy enough without it!!!). My dealer told me that many of his wealthy customers like an understated car like the RL which suits all of their needs and ego as well. It's like the Rockefeller's who drove Buick's instead of Cadillac's!
For my money, the RL is one of the best made cars in the world for the price. Honda engineering and quality are superior for numerous years of driving without big maintenance bills like BMW and Mercedes.
Where else can you get a car of this quality and performance for $499 a month? Repeat customers usually don't have to make the supplemental down payment, if any.
GO RL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comptech specializes in Honda parts and they have several things for the RL, but I forget what. Otherwise, have you spoken to the dealer, wreck? (Sure hope your name isn't a forecast.)
Thanks for the articulate 'apology' for a most under-appreciated car, adam.
Take care.

Joe,
Thanks for the info on parts at Comptech. FYI, Wreck is a version of "Ramblin Wreck", the old alma mater, not a prediction (I think). BTW, I am also contacting my local dealer. If purchasing used, as I did, does the roadside assistance, TLC, etc. transfer? This is not a major deal, as I have AAA, but just wondering.

I really don't know. My opinion is that they should as they are part of the car's package -- but let us know after you talk with the dealer. I'd be curious.
Take care.

Joe,
I spoke with Acura Customer Care, and the roadside assistance, etc. transfers as long as the car is within the warranty period. They took care of it over the phone. Thanks again for your help.
#544 of 7385 Sloshing Sound

We have a 2000 RL, and we often hear a sloshing sound from the firewall in front of the passenger seat. It mostly occurs when the vehicle is cold, and going from a stopped position to rolling forward or turning. I'm not concerned, but don't know what it is. Any thoughts?

The coolant probably has an air bubble in the line. My car did the same thing in the same area. I took it in the tech drained it down and added extra coolant. Since then, no more sloshing sound. Good luck.

Aloha, i'm in Honolulu-just made first acura purchase- 16 month old 2000 RL, silver, 10k miles, mint $28k from private party for wife. Thanks to all for info on this site really informative on RL. Car drives wonderfully and is a dream-in fact i'll be looking for another for myself if i can find similar deal locally. one item i did notice is car is a bit noiser than i expected. oh well we can't drive to far around island.
I shopped for new passat, toyota, TL for similar prices but dealers here just won't budget much on prices - made several serious offers above TMV but no luck locally in our capative Hawaii.
#547 of 7385 acuracare extended warranty

just bought 2000 RL non nav, 10600 miles, 2 1/2 yrs left on factory warranty. would appreciate advice about what RL owners think about how smart it would be to purchase acura care 7 yr 100k extended warranty- can purchase 0 deducatble for about $1200 from mainland dealer (local dealer quoted $1k more)-
I'm wondering about long term repairs after 50K or 4 yrs for things like electronic, AC, etc- seems like 4-5 dealer trips in 5,6 or 7th yr & warranty may be worthwhile-no considering peace of mind. What do you think?
I had 91 M5 and bought extended warranty from dealer and it paid for itself many times over. not sure about RL though., help

I would recommend it, but find out if you have to buy it now, if you can do it about 6 mos. prior to the end of the warranty period--just in case you decide to sell the car before that. In addition to my 2000 RL, I also have a 1995 Legend, and when I decided to keep it beyond the warranty period, I purchased an extended warranty. I think it was $1000 w/$50 deductible, but that was over two years ago. I've already broken even, so anything from here on in is a bonus, and it gave me the piece of mind to hold on to the car. I'll be out of warranty and the end of the summer, & then will have to decide what to do.
