So am I to understand that the sport auto is different than the steptronic? Even in auto mode? (I thought that the step was the best auto I ever had-in my 330i-). I usually leave it in auto mode except when I feel enthusiastic.

A timer set? I've been all through it and there isn't anything else that may affect this. So are you saying yours chime exactly on the hour? It's trivial I know but I'm just sayin'....

I'm in Canada, and here, the 535i or xi has regular tires as long as the SP is left off; once you tick the SP box, RTFs are on the car. I just ordered a xi, and left the SP off, mainly to avoid the RFTs.

"Steptronic" is merely BMW's generic name for their automatic transmissions which offer manual control(Porsche's is called "Tiptronic"). The automatic in the 335i and 535i is the ZF 6HP 19 TU six-speed transmission, which is ZF's second generation six speed automatic. It boasts faster shift speed and has been beefed up to handle the increased torque of the 3.0 liter twin turbo N54. The primary reasons I prefer it over other automatics are the shift speeds as well as the rev-matching downshifts. Like I said, if you have to get stuck with a slushbox, it's not too bad.

The answer to your problem and everyone else's who have this problem (it can occur in any car in any state from a yugo to a Bentley) is prevention (just like flossing!) The problem occurs when the cold air in the conduit meets the air and the water within condenses and mold grows and propagates. What you do is turn off the compressor (the "ac" button) with the fan still running, a couple of miles short of where you plan to park or your garage. I do it at the entrance of my subdivision as my house is 1.5 miles and 5 minutes away. This gives it time to dry out. The air is still cold because the tubes are still cold and your occupants will never know the difference. This gives the mold no place to grow and it never gets a beachhead. Squirting Lysol after the fact in your vents is like spraying Lysol after a good crap. It still smells like lysol-crap and in this case lysol-mold and really just temporarily covers it up.

I just drove the 550i with auto but no paddles. Is that a different trans? Is there a difference in the newer trans you mention above if one isn't shifting with paddles? In other words does it shift faster in the auto mode as well, when the car is "deciding"?

The 550 slushbox is a ZF 6HP 26Z, which is a different transmission.

The shift speed and "smoothness" varies according to accelerator pedal position, engine speed, and vehicle speed. I haven't driven a 550i; they aren't bad cars, but they simply aren't my cup of tea.

Thanks. What I was trying to understand, and I probably didn't say it correctly, was if the step slush box on the sport auto with paddle shifters is different than the normal step auto without the paddle shifters (except,of course, for the inclusion of the paddles)? So for instance, if one opts for the 535 auto without the sport pack and paddles is the trans different than the one on the xi version that isn't offered with paddles?

I'm not 100% sure, but as far as I know, there is no difference between the transmissions other than the lack of shift paddles and perhaps some different programming to accommodate the xDrive system.
