Audi A6, Sedan
Nov 20, 2004 (3:15 pm)
Owned a 1998 A6 and loved it. I tried to keep it till the new model arrived but there were too many costly things to fix so I traded last Feb. for a Cayenne S.I didn't like the Cayanne and was at the audi showroom the day the new A6 was in to demo. I picked up my car this week and cant stop driving it. Even better than the old Audi. I've got the 3.2 and can't believe you'd ever need more power especially if you drive it triptonic which I do. For the person who asked about amerreto interior, Mine is a black car with amerreto and it is smashing. I'm also curios about voice recognition. I wish I ordered it.How well does it work and can it be dealer installed? How about using regular gas? Has any body tried it and notice any decrease in performance? The A6 is a wonderful car and anyone would be have a hard time finding a better car to drive.

I don't have voice command, but I do have NAV. The NAV system does give audio (voice) cues, and turns are also shown in the driver's display. It is a very slick system.
FWIW, I've heard (from a salesman) that the voice command system doesn't work all that well, but I've never tried it myself.

I spoke to a dealer today about the voice command and he was very funny about it saying "it is brand new and has some bugs". Time will tell.

The mid- grade was recommended by my dealer- and my new '05 3.2 runs great on it...

I ran into this question several years ago, when our A6 was having serious electrical problems. Apparently, there were a sufficient number of vehicles affected such that Audi sent an electrical engineer from Germany to tour dealerships and examine problems. I asked this gentleman (in english; my german is quite rusty) about the premium fuel "recommendation". He was quite explicit: never use any grade other than premium.
Audi's, according to him, have knock sensors that, when activated, modify ignition to prevent premature detonation. However, this is intended to prevent catastrophic failure in the event that either poor fuel is utilized, or a lower octane grade is all that is available. It is, in essence, a stop gap measure. The reason that lower octane fuel must not be employed, on a regular basis, is what occurs when the sensor/ignition fails: detonation will result, unchecked, resulting in severe damage to the engine. While it is likely that one could drive for many miles with no problem, why take the chance? First, engine performance is somewhat reduced. Second, and most important, I question if Audi would honor a warranty claim if the A6 had a tankful of mid-octane or regular gas. An Audi, as we know, is no bargain to repair.

In Audi's 3.2 specs it states regular gas. On the Audi chat Marc Trahan said you can use regular gas, but premium will give you better performance. I don't remember if he said it will increase MPG.
I know that Kirstie, our host, said a transcript of that chat will be available. Kirstie how do we access it?

I am not familiar with the 2005 recommendations. However, the information that I was given was applicable to the previous A6's, utilizing the 2.8 and 3.0 engines. We had a 1998, 2002 and 2004. The engineer's comments were related to those models.
I signed off of the chat prior to Trahan mentioning octane grades. However, if I had a 2005, and was going to use regular fuel, I would use whatever Audi recommended: So long as it was in writing.

Once the transcript is available (meaning Audi has "signed off" on it), there will be a link on our forums home page. As soon as I see that it's up, I'll post a link in this discussion.

The C6 manual and gas tank sticker both recommend premium. I had also heard that we could use regular, but based on the information in writing that I have, I will be sticking to premium. Not worth saving a few 100 dollars annually at the engine's detriment.

is easy and works very well. I delivered my first A6 w/ voice rec today and it went very smoothly. I didn't notice any bugs, however, neither my client nor myself have an accent of any type...
