| this past Sunday...after looking at more SUVs than I can count, and I really would like an SUV for the carrying space with a dog, I sat down and realized that I really need a good road car with 25K miles per year...considered a used Cadillac DTS or STS, and then decided I wanted a new car...the dealer had a 2004 (manufactured 08/03) on the lot, gray with gray leather, inflatable lumbar supports on both passenger and driver, with 8-way power seats for each, and the LX Sport had the floor shifter just like I wanted!!!...(correct me if I am wrong, but looking at Edmunds photos, it seemed like NONE of the Grand Marquis came with a floor shifter [not counting the Marauder], altho they could be had with the handling suspension and dual exhaust, just no floor shifter)...I do like the car, it has everything except sunroof, and without the sunroof I could not get Homelink, which would take the place of the bulky garage remote control...tire pressure, according to the door sticker, is 35 psi cold, which is surprisingly high, so I inflated them to 37 psi cold, now the car rides a little better...two small complaints...are there any HIGH-POWER aftermarket stereo/CD units that could exactly fit in the space for the current unit, as the stereo is not exactly the 290-watt audiophile system available in the Explorer or the LS...also, a small quirk...the gas pedal is about 3 inches to the left of the tunnel, so I cannot rest my foot againt the tunnel and press the accelerator, my foot has to "hang in midair" while I accelerate...is there any type of store that might sell an "extender" or a "widener" that will widen the pedal so I can rest my foot againt the tunnel???...any thoughts appreciated...I do enjoy the car, altho the previously mentioned rumors of more HP/Torque would be nice, say the LS engine at 290 HP, heh, heh, heh... | |
| Is there any hope that the hopefully sooner than later redesign of the Full Size Ford and Mercury sedans will be able to compete with the new Chrysler 300's? | |

marsha7-Mercury's come with the floor mounted console just to let you know. As for Ford,I think they know what they're doing. They do seem to be behind most times on things for keeping up with products but that's what GM's for.Don't forget the Big 3 players talk with each other. DD |

Has anyone had a problem or heard of a problem with the 2004 Grand Marquis or Crown Vic jumping into gear and accelerating after the car was started?

You see lot's of ads on TV and in Magazines for all of the new model cars. One of the best kept secrets is Ford's Crown Vic. and Grand Marquis. Ford did an upgrade of the steering and suspension in 2003 adding variable rack and pinion steering and a new "boxed" frame, they already have a "watts link" rear suspension, (you will have to look that up on Google to find out what it is),with big 4 wheel duel piston anti lock disc's, and "traction control". And they come with 225/60/16 Michelins for tires. As Ford sells most of these Panther chassis cars to fleets, I.E. police ect. they do not advertise them much.. What you will find is that they share many main components with the new F-150 truck. The 4.6 V8 engine, 4070RW 4-speed auto transmission, and the same solid axle rear end.. If you think of the design of these cars more like a Porsche..(a car constantly being improved and perfected over many years), rather than being restyled every year, you will realize what a value they are.. My 2004 just went on a trip to Lake Tahoe.. cruising at 70+mph and climbing 7000ft. mountain passes, I averaged 24 mpg.(2.72 ratio). I have the horsepower to pass slow motor homes and trucks with ease, and comfort you can't find short of a Mercedes. It handles on the interstate like one too. Ford needs to put on an ad campaign to let buyers know that they have a solid, tested rear drive competitor to the new(experimental) Chrysler 300 Hemi that is built like a truck and handles like a Jaguar and gets good mileage doing it. Just my 2 cents worth.. Mojave

The LSE model was discountinued halfway through the 2003 model year, and along with it, the console/floor shifter option. It is still available in the Crown Vic. |
|
| I think it is only available on the 300 hp all aluminum 4 valve Mercury Marauder..Last chance for that, I think 2004 is the last year for it.. | |

Nope. Floor shifter was available the entire run for 2004 Crown Vic LX Sport and remains so in 2005: http://www.downsford.com/order_guides/2005%20Crown%20Victoria%20O- rder%20Guide.pdf In fact, one out of five Crown Vics sold at retail during MY2005 are projected to have the floor shifter. |

My 2000 Intrepid R/T needs a new a/c evaporator, on a car that is only 4 years old and only 55,000 miles. My mechanic told me it is about 9 hours labor, plus around $280 for the part - figure around $1,000 with tax, supplies, etc. He knows this because he just did the exact same repair on a 99 300M two weeks ago. He told me to contact Chrysler for relief, as one of his mechanics worked at the Dodge dealership for years, and they fixed the evaporators all the time on the full size Chryslers. The a/c in my 94 Grand Marquis works flawlessly, and always had. My mechanic, who besides having worked on civilian Panther platforms, does the work on the Crown Vic fleet of a small local police dept, and I've asked him if he's seen any issues with the "Panther" platform a/c systems. He told me that other than fixing minor leaks on some of them, he's cannot recall ever doing a major repair on any of them. I knew back in 2000 I should have bought another Grand Marquis, but I was seduced by the style of the Dodge. Luckily I kept my old one, as it is now my summer car, as well as my road trip car. I only hope they keep building the Panther, as I'll always own one for at least a back-up car. |
