Overdrive by jsylvester

Myself, I've never heard of one going out before. I've heard of torque converter issues from bad fluid, but even then that is fixed by merely replacing the fluid.

I've been told that the transmission fluid should be changed every 25-30K miles on our cars. Especially if you drive alot of short distance driving or heavy traffic. I change mine every 30K miles and have no problems so far at 72K miles. Is it possible the fluid was never changed and that this may have caused the problems?

I honestly think Mercury should freshen-up the Grand Marquis. Even though the majority of the sales are to cab companies and police fleets, they should just add some new things. New attractive styling, newer features, and other updated things that may draw buyers to it. While almost all of the Mercurys in the Mercury line-up have key-Mercury styling details, the Grand Marquis doesn't. I think Mercury should just think about even adding little things that would make it better.

The Crown Vic has many of its sales to fleets. That is NOT true of the Grand Marquis.

There is even speculation that some day the Crown Vic will ONLY be available to fleets, but so far the Ford dealers have raised so much you know what that that has not happened.

And if the cars are/were selling without substantial investments, Ford didn't/wasn't going to do much to them.

The Chrsyler 300C and Dodge Magnum (and coming Charger) may change all that. Or not.

2006 Refreshing by jsylvester

Cars are to be refreshed for 2006. What that means is unclear, but expect no huge changes.

Some talk that the new 3 valve cylinder head 4.6 engine in the 05 Mustang will make it, and a lot of hope that the interior will be updated. I would not expect any big exterior changes, as the styling has worn well for it's purpose.

As mentioned, if the 300 steals sales, expect to see more changes.

Thanks for the tip. I tlaked to Ford afew times about the CAT issue and they all said the cats have to be there. As for the axhaust system, I believe I will go dual. Not sure how the muffler shop will do it. I have not talked with my muffler guy in awhile. I did think about a three inch system on my Vic, but that would look kinda funny, though the result may be awesome...I will run that by my muffler guy to see if a three incher will fit around the rear axle, etc.

'95-'97 Buying Tips? by ceprise

We're about to take the CV/GM plunge. Our '99 Concorde (bought last year) died an engine death. I wanted a CV/GM last year but my wife wanted "style". She drives 20-25K per year as a visiting nurse and likes some iron around her. With 2 kids in college, we can't afford new or near new. I've noticed a lot of nice CV/GMs on the market, with less than 50K miles and in the '95 to '97 model years. Any buying or maintenance tips for these years?

Carbuyer2 - I bought a year-old 2000 GM LS by harmar2

in '01. It retailed originally for $28,000 and change. It had 16,800 miles on it and was in excellent condition. I paid $16,400 + tax for it. It came with the warranty intact (ask about that, as they can sell it w/o one)and has been a superb car. One minor repair out of warranty. Just did all the 50,000 work. Ask if the seller will provide you with a CarFax check. If not, pay for it yourself (www.carfax.com). A lot out there are floating around with six or seven different titles issued. (Mine had two.) I hope that gives you some help. Good luck.

Crown Vic Buying Tips by jsylvester

The car is basically the same since 1992, though there has been numerous upgrades/changes. 1995 was the first year for the silicon valve seals, as the engines have excellent reputations, only the earlier models would burn oil from leaky valve seals once they hit 150k.

Make sure you keep the tranny fluid changed, including the torque converter, with the newer Mercron IV fluid. The trannies are solid too, only they can get torque converter shudder which the newer fluid helps avoid.

I have a 94 Grand Marquis with leather, autotemp, digital dash, air suspension, 109,000 miles, and I love it. I suggest to hold out for a Grand Marquis LS or the Crown Vic LX with the leather and autotemp, with an added bonus you will have little worry about it being an old rental car. They are excellent used cars, as typically they are owned by older people who keep them properly maintained. They were designed back in the day when cars were overbuilt, and I think you will really like it.
