izaclown1: In which vehicle does the seat lean towards the door - the Sable or the GM?

That's an unusual problem. I've never heard of that on any vehicle. It shouldn't be hard to fix. Just unbolt the seat and shim it with some washers until you get it level.

I would be a little extra cautious about looking for structural defects before buying a car with this problem.

OD shift by bobparks1

Our 2003 Grand Marquis does not shift into overdrive on a level road until the car reaches 43 mph. Is there a way to get it to shift into overdrive around 35 mph? Lots of 35 and 40 mph speed limits where I drive.

Sorry, this was on the GM. The L/M dealer said they would shim it, no problem or replace the entire seat if needed. That particular one I test drove is still under warranty.

I just found it odd that out of 5 cars I looked at 4 of them made you feel like you were going to fall out of the drivers door. I had never heard or felt such a thing in all my life. I still want a GM LS if I can find all the bells and whistles at a good price.

It could be reprogrammed to shift earlier, though I don't know why you'd want it to and I don't think it would be wise.

A transmission needs a certain amount of line pressure to keep from slipping, and they can't generate much line pressure when the input shaft speed is very low. This is why automatics behind diesel engines took so long to become durable.

If you have the 2.73 rear end, which is likely, you would be asking the engine to turn 844 rpm in OD at 35 mph. As it is, it's upshifting to OD at a little under 1500 rpm and dropping to a hair over 1000. This is already surprisingly low for an engine that doesn't make peak torque until 4000 rpm.

Thanks for the information on the shift points and rpm. The 2003 GM we have does not have a tachometer and I did not realize that the rpm were already pretty low. Sorry it took so long to read your post. We were on a trip.

slight 'nudging' feeling at all speeds by garydale

95 GM 60k, car has real slight 'nudging or bumping' feeling from about 25-70 at steady speeds with overdrive on or off. Notice the most on real smooth road. Revs up smooth from idle and doesnt cough or sputter on acceleration. Just had Motorcraft plugs and Motorcraft wires installed, trans and TC oil changed and trans has all the updates. Shifts fine. Transmission man thinks its a miss. Ford tech scanned, says everything checks out with no CEL or vacuum leaks. Double checked plug wires and coil holes. Gas milage down 3 MPG........................Anyone ever have this problem? Thinking maybe replace both coil packs next? Seems like whatever it is it isnt showing up on any tests.

Have you cleaned your EGR valve and passages lately? 60k is a little early for EGR related problems, but if you drive easy it could be possible. EGR malfunctions can be noticable to the driver before they get bad enough to set off a code.

Ford tech said EGR stuff OK. I'll ask him again if EGR could show these symptoms. Hes out of town for a week till I see him again. Originally diagnosed misfire on #8. Had a definite miss. After two sets of plugs and plug wires ( big miss gone but little nudging remains. Drives me crazy as car always ran 100% beautiful.Car still starts and runs normal except for slight nudging feeling. Each mourning when I put it in reverse and back out I feel a split second (miss? shake? or vibration?) .................................................................- .....I was thinking maybe problem still has to do with #8, either Coil pack or injector. Dont know symptoms of weak coil or bad injector to focus on one or the other????? Figure its gonna cost another $100 for anybody to look at it so figured maybe I'd throw a $100 at it first. After 2 mechanics and trans man, now I got the ball again. Thanks for response

98 GM trans clunk/startup valve by dadoctor

Greetings. I have a 98 GM with 95K miles.

1) Trans clunk...When I drive up a hill above 35,trans slips/clunks. On level ground, it seems generally ok. I had the trans fluid changed recently prior to a trip to FL. Prior to this, the trans was fine, but the fluid was black. After the service(oil change place), the trans behaves this way. Any thoughts on next steps? Take it to a dealer? Was the repair incomplete?

2) Several months back, upon cold startup, the engine would die. I had to use both feet until the engine warmed up. After taking it to a dealer, the engine needed new plugs, a new startup valve, (and something else related). Other than the trans, the engine seems great.

3) Sometimes, when I turn hard left to park, the steering makes a strange noise. Do I need a ball joint replacement? Mahalo(Hawaiin for many special thanks)
