'99 Crown Vic / Grand Marquis Steel Wheels by mr5by5

I posted several places for source for 16 X 7 steel wheels for my '99 GM. Only info I have found on-line was that Tire Racks "sometimes" has steelies for about $50 (not right now!) and that you can buy 'em from Ford for about $100 apiece. Local salvage yards that had them used wanted $40-50 but nearby yards had none.
I broke-down and bought new ones from my local tire store. They are brand new, painted black, exact replacements for originals - the price was $60 apiece!
Now I have 2 sets so I can wear-out my old tires driving to the grocery store and save the new ones for road-trips!

Wheel Rattles on G.M. / Crown Vic With Locking Wheel-covers by mr5by5

I noticed while changing wheels on my '99 GM that the mount bracket that attaches the wheel cover to lug nuts fits loosely to allow centering of wheel-cover. It occurred to me that, if your wheel-cover lock screw is not real tight the bracket might be moving around and causing a rattle. A friend has a '99 GM with a rattle that was hard to find - a shop "fixed" the problem by telling him they lubed some bushings, maybe and maybe not! I am going to be suspiscious of those wheel-cover locks everytime I hear about a "suspension rattle" now!

Before you say, "is he nuts" I do know the engine differences between the two cars. I am wondering subjectively, if there is that much of a difference.

My only experience with CV/GM is as renters in Florida, so they have the base 224 hp engine. Even with that, I have found that they are quite fast if driven with a lead foot. Ive owned two Mustang GT's, and have a G35 now (which I want to get rid of), so Im used to stong off the line speed.

I found that the GM/CV was almost unbeatable at a stoplight, and nothing short of a Mustang or similar V8 could beat it. Perhaps its high end performace falls off..but from a stop its awesome.

My read of the Maurauder is that the low end is a bit less due to the multi-cams..but Ive not driven one so I could be wrong about this.

So besides style diffrences, is there that much of an off-the-line difference between the CV and Maurauder? Is handling much different as well?

I think what is so deceptive about the GM/CV is how easy it is to dirve, so the absolute speed creeps up on you. My G35 is a 260 HP RWD V6, and its a fast car. But in comparison to the GM/CV, it is a handfull to drive, and Ive lost patience with it (and the drivers seat is painful if your not thin). So Id like to know what you all think..bottom line is Im trying to convince myself not to spend the extra $$ for a Maurauder..times are bad you know (:

I just say in the sunday New York Times that in this area due to the car show they have increased the rebate by an additional $500. So if you are an AARP member, the rebate is $5000!..now if they would only do that for the crown vic!!

Should I buy a used police car? by giton

There is a car lot near me selling used police cars. The interiors are trashed, stained, etc.
The exteriors look great.
My concern is how much life can I expect out of a used police car, does anyone have an opinion?
The prices are so tempting...

I see in your profile you're in Chicago; I was wondering if this article applies to you:

as for how much life you can get out of a used police car, I don't know. I've only had mine since December, I have 104k on it now, and it feels like it should go 200k. But, who knows? I'd say they're like any used car: the newer the better - the fewer miles the better.

Personally I would not buy one unless you want the Interceptor suspension, transmission, engine, and brakes. I use to "work" with a P.D. They do not treat their cars nice to say the least. (Ex. The stains in the car is one example) The outside might look nice because most P.D.s require that you wash your Take Home Car (THC, not the drug, LOL) at least once a week. Even though all maintenance is paid for by the city/county or state it all depends on the Officer to turn the car in for scheduled maintenance. With CV Interceptors the NO. 1 concern is the transmission. That is the first thing that will give out.
