What is this discussion about? Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ-Series, Lexus LS 460, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Volkswagen Phaeton, Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes-Benz CL-Class, Sedan

Let's try to define this forum as being limited to luxury performance vehicles where the mainstream version in a typical configuration has an MSRP of at least $60k.

A luxury vehicle with a base price of $59k qualifies because it would typically be bought with some additional equipment, bringing the MSRP over $60k.

Vehicles like the E, 5, A6, M, or GS, even if available in certain versions over $60k, don't qualify because they are cars from companies that have higher end cars in their lineups.

But what is interesting is that the early information that has been leaking out about the E and C indicate that they may not follow the look of the S quite so closely this time. And you are right that we would have expected them to be smaller replicas. It is highly conceivable that they will not, however, and they will have more individual attributes.

If BMW driving dynamics were what I was looking for and my needs were a large family sedan than the 7 would be the car and the class leader of BMW in my eyes. It's definitely not what you are looking for and I pray that the BMW 7 series does not ever resemble the driving dynamics that you seek in a Lexus. I dont mean that in any negative way whatsoevr. I am just trying to say that it would be tragic if Lexuses began to drive like BMWs and BMWs began to drive like Lexuses because if that was the case then many customers of both these marques would feel alienated. You know that is substantiating a statement made yesterday - that being the 3 is not truly a luxury car. Absolutely right. The 3, especially the M series is the ultimate driving machine and not a ultimate luxury machine. Anyone believing otherwise are deceiving themselves.

The American market has 3 key/dominant players in the large high-end lux sedan segment and it will be that way for the forseeable future. I think the new LS and the new S will cut Audi back to a 1500-2000 a year car though. Great cars can lift the entire segment up and that's what we want. The competition holds in price points and the consumer wins. We don't want a one car segment here. Replying to: tagman (Jan 08, 2006 5:37 pm) The euphoria posts on the 2007 LS board. No need to say anyone with solid sales is heading for the coffin. I do see Lexus cracking 40k cars, maybe even 45K cars with this new car but I also think the whole segment will have increased car sales. Both the new S and new LS will generate a lot of enthusiasm and the LS hybrid will notch it up higher still. Long-term - this will be very difficult for Audi and Jaguar to stay in (in the US) and they'll have to treat it as loss leaders. The guys with deep pockets have both the cash and the category killer cars.

But a great player often overlooked was John Stalworth. He made some of the greatest catches I've ever seen including two brilliant long ones in the Super bowl vs. the Cowboys. The late 70's, early 80's Steelers are still my favorite all-time team. OK - back to cars and Goodnight for now.
