kp11, Does the regular 8 Audi series compare with a BMW 540 or E class? I think most purchasers who are looking at a Audi 8 are also looking at the 7series BMW and the S class. You might have something on the XJR. The vanden plas supercharged version should compare against the S55. |

| The supercharged vanden plas is already here. I saw one at a local dealer 3 weeks ago. If your referring to the S55 I don't know if it will every get here. By the way, there was a magazine article that was comparing the S8 and the S55 in Europe. | |
| all of the cars can jump around in teh categorys, people compare the mid-size super luxury sedans (i.e. ls400 and A8) to the large-size super luxury sedans (i.e. 740iL, s430, xjr vandenplas)... so they all pretty much compete with each other... teh s8, xjr, xj8 vandeplas turbo, gs430 (maybe???) e55, m5, m7(when it comes out), s55.... it doesn't matter, they all compete with each other | |

You cant compare anything a E55 has to an M5. The M5 has better technology, better overall performace, outstanding looks (compared to an off the shelf E320 look of the E55). The XJR is out of question becuz Jag's are junk, bad depreciation and sub par reliability. Not to mention they are owned by Ford (a BIG Zero in value). The only resonable peer to the M5 might be the E55, but in a scale with only these two vehicles, the M5 is lightyears beyond the E55 in every category. And in responce to singh5 for saying "so do u want pureperformance, or do u want luxury and comfort along with performance" YOU are kidding yourself to even believe a BMW has lower comfort than a MB. Either that or you probably have an E55, or its on order. If its still not arrived yet your in luck. This is the prime oppurtunity to cancel the order and call up your local BMW dealer instead. I bet u cant even get CLOSE to reproducing the zero-60 times of your car... |

| the m5 has better handling than the e55, however it is not better in luxury, i have driven both the m5 and teh e55 numerous times, the benz has much more comfortable seats and the interior is a tad better, also its suspension is not as harsh as the m5's suspension... i'm not sayin the m5 is bad... its no where near bad, teh m5 is the ultimate sports sedan, however if you want to be a "little" more comfortable, then the e55 is your choice, also teh 0-60 times for teh cars are both the same... and i would venture to say that if the e55 has a manual, it would be faster than the m5 becasue it has more torque than the m5... i am wondering, have u even driven both cars??? the m5 is also much smaller than the e55, this just shows you how powerful the AMG engine is... technology wise, they are both about equal... in comfort the e55 wins, in handling the m5 wins by a margin because the amg handling is not bad, but the m handling is superior... in looks they are about equal, but overall, the e55 does the best job of putting comfort, luxury and performance together, the m5 is also good, but its not as comfortable, its not as big, and its not as supple as the e55, if you are just buying these sedans for pure performance, than the m5 is your choice, but if you want to be comfortable, if you want a medium sized cars, and both are the same in everything else... the e55 is better than the m5, so you cannot say that the m5 is much better, the ONLY thing i would sya it has better is the suspension and handling... everything else (i.e. speed, looks, technology (maybe more towards e55 actually) they are the same... however in comfort and practicality, the e55 wins... just depends on what u want... neither is miles ahead of the other, i just like the e55 better | |

just in case you wanted to know... the 2000 e55 has a tad more technology than teh m5, also here are the 0-60 ratings m5 - compact sedan - manual - 0-60 in 5.1s e55 - medium sedan - automanual - 0-60 in 5.1s where is your big difference??? |

Technically better in every way? Hmmm, I think that the E55 has Rack and pinion steering and the M5 has the old Recirculating ball steering. These two cars are exceptionally close to each other. Both are WONDERFUL vehicles. You get the M5 is you are extremely performance oriented or a BMW nut. Yout get the E55 is your performance oriented but want an Auto due to everyday driving conditions, or are a Mercedes nut. Take your biased opinions elsewhere. They will just be laughed at here. |
