Yes, that water had contaminated the oil which was no longer providing good bearing lubrication, so the damage to the bearings was probably done before the head gaskets were ever changed. Once the heads were put back on the worn engine block the compression increased which put more stress on the already old and probably damaged bearings which lead to the result you had.
The lesson here is that major repairs to a high mileage engine usually aren't worth much - the final outcome which was to replace the engine with a rebuilt was the best choice from the start, depending of course on other factors, such as overall condition of the car, age of the rest of the drivertrain, etc.

Starter Replacement - 1995 Grand Am by rzimm23

Has anyone ever replaced a starter on a 1995 Grand Am with the 2.3 Litre Quad Four Engine? I am assuming the starter is bad but was also thinking it could be the solenoid - wherever it might be located in the engine compartment????

Thanks
Ryan

hell yes it works! cut that stupid yellow wire! its keeping you from enjoying your ride! I spent hundreds of dollars and tons of man hours till I finally took ten minutes to get to that damn wire and cut it. My car is working great now. and remember, if your scared to cut it, you can always put it back together again. No harm no foul. but I highly suggest it

if you pull the radio out, on the left you will see the back of the ignition cylinder, it has a sleeve of three different wires in it, one is white, one black, and one is yellow. the yellow is the data wire that is associated with your passlock system. ( my car is a 2003 but the same passlock problem apparently has been going on for years). now apparently to do this technique you have to have the car running first. soooo...... try to start the car, when it doesnt start check to see if your security light is either staying on or flashing(see owners manual "anti theft system") leave the key in the on position for 10 minutes. after ten minutes you should be able to start it. put car in neutral. take out radio, dont unplug it, you just need that space to work in, so just let it hang till your done. behind the ignition switch is your black sleeve that has the three wires, cut the yellow wire. tape the wires, or cap them, or I recommend installing a toggle switch. but that can wait till another time when your ready. once the yellow wire is cut, the security light should come on and stay on "forever". Now if your battery dies or you put in a new battery, you will have to reconnect the yellow wire to get the car started the first time but then just disconnect it again ( thats the reason for the toggle switch) but even without the toggle switch, its well worth the inconvenience. I do hope this works for you. as I said, even if it doesnt work, its free, it takes ten minutes, its reversable, and its working for alot of people. I love my grand am, but was about to burn it in the street till this fixed all my problems

Anyone know how to self fix a crack in the front bumper??
I own a 2001 GT, silver, and noticed a crack about 5 inches long on front bumper near the fog light on driver side. Is there some sort of quick fix I could do myself, just so it doesnt get bigger or crack all the way through?

it shouldn't get any bigger...unless you repeatedly hit the bumper in the same spot. I have a 99 grand am se and i hit someone about a year and a half ago. cracked my front bumper and demolished the left side of my reinforcement bar but the crack hasn't gotten any bigger since. if it gets bigger i would worry but until then i think you're fine...
