coolant leak by rjs2298

My 97 Grand Am GT has a coolant leak. We have to put coolant or water now in every 40 miles or so, a mechanic said it is a gasket that we have to remove the top of the engine block off to fix, when we fill the resevoir the water is rusty looking, is this an indication that it is the head gasket? The water comes out when we stop (a lot) but it is always dripping, it drips on the belt/pulleys

i had the samething happen to my 2001 grand am. it was overheating and the coolant tank was always empty. the local car place said the fans didn't come on and it was the computer not turning them on , so i had it replaced and flashed. it over heated the next day. after all that and $450 SPENT ON SOMETHING THAT DIDN'T FIX IT. i had the cap on the tank presure tested, it was bad. it made the water overflow out of the tank. check the cap.....

If they said they had to remove the top of the engine, they probably mean the intake manifold. Depending on what engine you have, many of the 60 degree V6's are susceptible to a lower intake manifold gasket leak. I personally had this happen under warranty, and it was replaced. Involves taking the top of motor apart. Indication is if you look down the sides of the motor and see coolant leaking from the "valley" (area between the cylinder heads) down the engine block, then it's probably the LIM gasket. Something to check out maybe.

me too!!!!

i have an 99 olds alero with the exact same symptoms you have, including the diagnostic codes. i am sure the problem has nothing to do with the evap systems, but most likely a bad ground or relay. i am trying to figure it out.

have you determined the problem?

I am experiencing similar maladies to the one described in messages 2443&4: 2-3 wks ago my 2002 GrandAm (54,106) started having problems with delayed A/C, digital readings (on dash board), and radio start-up about 1-2 minutes after ignition. Then, the Service Vehicle Soon light would come on for the remainder of the trip. The next time I started it, no problem. This went on for a while and then it wouldn't start at all. It would turn over, but not start. My dad disconnected the battery and had it checked (perfect condition), jumped it, had it towed, had the mechanic run a diagnostic....still nothing. Then, it started with no problem, no SVS light, nil. My dad drove it for a week with no problem. Just this week, the SVS light has started coming on again (sporadically as before). Also, just today, I started it and no delays...but the Security light came on. I was reading the above reply and wondering if this sounded like the same problem? Do you have any suggestions and how do you reset the security computer, if this does sound like it? Any suggestions appreciated~

What up everyone. I have a 1999 grand am that overheated about 2 months ago. the block ended up cracking on me. I got a new engine put in and the same thing happened 2 weeks later! can someone please give me some ideas on why this is happening! I have changed the waterpump, flushed the radiator, put in a new throttle. fans work, radiator cap is fine. maybe electric? I dont know
