Q, ya gotta watch MMR... it's not showing you that most of these seem to have sport package... and it's what a car will do across an auction block, not what a dealer is likely to pay on trade.
Without sport, assuming it's an automatic, no paintwork and clean carfax.. upper 22s to $23k.
Galves is $22,725 with 41k. Say I take the car in on trade tonight, in Paramus NJ where I am right now. OK, it might do $24k at Manheim if I can get a good run number. $250 sell fee, $200 to ship it there, another hundred to get it detailed, flip the title, etc.
And that's hoping that the car actually sells and that the market doesn;t drop (Like it's starting to) while I'm waiting for the title to get flipped or a payoff from the bank.
In other words... I'd need to be $23k max to be safe. OTOH, that will net you $1600 in tax savings here in Jersey.. a bit more in NY.

Galves is $14,600 on it. Depending where you trade it (Elements are kind of extinct these days) the right dealer might go $15k on it.. but these can be really tough to move.
Assuming clean, no paintwork, expect $14,500 or thereabouts.

yeah, the lack of selecting options in MMR is throwing me quite a bit.
out of curiosity, is that $22,7 number from Galves the base trade-in or the market ready number?

It's a base trade number.
Market ready is.. well... nobody I know uses it. It's supposed to assume either what a "ready" car will bring on the wholesale market, either sold to a dealer by a wholesaler or what it might do at auction.
That's the thing with MMR, you gotta get a feel for it. You don't know which cars ran with dirty carfaxes, or unibody damage, etc.
Look at say, Cadillac DTSs. You'll see that 2 white ones ran, one did $18,400 one did $22,500.
Well, one was a slick top in Kenmore/Maytag white with 16s and a bench seat and paintwork down the side while the other was White Diamond Pearl with a slider, floor shift, ventilated seats, nav and chrome 17s and knee deep in fresh Michelins and it was in Hollenshead's lane right when the sandwich trays came out.
But both show on MMR as regular sale cars at Manheim last Friday.

On Galves, I rarely traded my cars for that base number only because I know mine rarely need reconditioning. So as long as the dealer is putting it on his lot, I feel justified pushing for the market ready number. it has worked on several occasions, but, yeah, there are those times when they need to wholesale it and need to keep that number low. As long as it's reflected in the price of what I'm buying, it's all good.
On mar, I still haven't figure out where I can view actual results. It is not a very intuitive design they have there.

Thanks for the help. MDX is our first choice and it is nice to know that we don't have to jump right away since the price if fair and we could find another one if this one sells.
Why in the world would the Highlander bring that kind of money. Wouldn't everyone rather have an MDX or an RX?
I didn't realize that light green was a bad color, I was only guessing red was the kiss of death. I could live with it but the place isn't negotiating and it sounds like it is then priced about 4k high.

Only thing I can think of is the roomier 3rd row. MDX' is tiny, RX has none at all.
Only recently did it become a split bench, though.

I do think 28,000 for an MDX is good buy. The problem is that around here the mark up, or at least the asking price on MDXs is staggering. Basically, the asking price scares me away. So if 28 is a fair price, what should the asking price be? Maybe at the most 30,000? I have only bought new cars but am thinking of going used this time. How much realistically does a dealer come down, on a car that is relatively new to the lot. Meaning they haven't "dropped" the price twice already. Is is fair to assume that they will take 10% off or is that too much. I realize this is a tough question to answer but just a ball park would be great to know.

Perhaps most of the time, but I'm sure quite a few more folks use it at least a few times.
Here's an example - for every kid activity, there's a car pool. My wife was in groups of 4-5 kids more than once. Honors chorus went in one single car.
If you only had room for 3 kids in the back, that meant you were left out, and had to drive alone every time or find a smaller car pool (there wasn't one for honors chorus).
So with a 3rd row - you might have to make 1 out of every 4-5 trips.
No 3rd row meant you drove twice a day, back and forth.
It's a pass/fail type of thing. Hence the higher value of the Highlander, though the MDX would work in a pinch.
