Given that the newer Boxsters are said to have about 55% of their content from the 911, it's interesting that resale hasn't been better. Also, there have been a number of engine failure reports involving 911s, so it'll be interesting to see how well they hold their value as word gets around.

I will say this for the Boxster: its handling will match or beat anything that's on the road today. Beyond that, I'm not impressed. I tell people that, for $60,000, it's a very nice $40,000 roadster. You pay an awful lot for that little gold badge on the hood. For me, this Porsche hasn't had the same longstanding appeal as the 968 convertible I owned for 10 years.

So far, maintenance costs have been fairly low because I only drive it about 3,500 miles a year and an annual checkup at the dealer, including oil change, is about $450. But no Porsche is reasonable to own, unless you're comfortable doing your own mechanical work. At the dealer, an oil change is $250 alone. On some of the Porsche forums, we get guys who want to buy one by the skin of their teeth and we tell them that they need to have a sizeable reserve fund for maintenance. There are some great deals to be had on new and used Boxsters right now, but if you have to add $5K for an extended warranty or $14-$20K for a blown engine, they're not really such great deals.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try another Miata (I love them, but still don't fit quite right in the cabin) or wait for a redesigned Honda S2000 or the upcoming Nissan 370Z convertible. I think Japanese is the way to go. I wish Mazda would make an RX-8 roadster.

I probably will end up with another Miata, mostly because I've been happy with mine.

Perhaps I've been lucky but I don't think I've spent $1200 in repairs in the 8 years I've had it, and keep in mind it was already 8 years old when I bought it. And I'm including a timing belt and water pump, which are maintenance, really.

To put that in perspective, I've spent $8.33 per month on average on repairs. On a 16 year old vehicle.

I doubt even a newer Miata will match that rate.

A Porsche would make you extremely happy... but, eventually, it will make you cry....

It is still the greatest car I've ever owned... but, when my child was born, I knew it had to go... and, I was extremely lucky... Probably only spent around $2500-$3000 in the four years that I had it... and this was in the early '90s...

My budget would tolerate that.

My budget would not tolerate engine replacement, though.

Exactly... but, there are no guarantees.. That was a lot of money for me, then... Plus, $20K to buy the car in the first place... It was the possibilities that moved me to sell it..

I blame my wife....

I know that this isn't the right place to post this, but I have owned several Porsches. When I gave up D.E.'s and club racing, I was looking for a fun roadster. I was sure that I wanted a Boxster. I drove it and it was "OK", but I wasn't blown away. I decided to test drive the new Miata PRHT. Well....I bought it. Great car and very easy to own. I even put snows on it so I can drive it year round. (and I have other cars to drive)
I paid list price cause it was just out and in demand, but you can get 5k off on an '08 now.
No regrets here.......
