I don't know that trade in prices are ever gonna come back.
The whole truck and SUV market is in for some permanent shrinkage.

Maybe you can look into refinancing your truck for a longer term.
Although a lot of lenders are cracking down on how much they lend on these vehicles.
My best advice is to try and find other areas in your life where you can economize.
Look hard enough and I bet you can find a couple hundred dollars a month that you can save elsewhere.

Thanks for getting back to me......any idea how to counter the argument that KBB values the car at less than $15500. I'm sure there's been a discussion previously but KBB always seems lower than other sources yet some dealers insist on using it as their reference point (including the volvo dealer I recently e-mailed!) Can you let me know the approx. wholesale value of the car. Thanks again

Any value I quote is what I believe the wholesale value to be.
Now, KBB has come down a TON on SUV's, because over the past few months SUV have been trading way below KBB's pricepoints.
So, it's possible that KBB is more pessemistic than the market right now.

Dealers are going to be VERY cautious about trading for SUV's also.
This isn't a time to try and get top dollar for a truck or SUV.

Location: Traded in Philadelphia west suburbs
Year/Make/Model: 1998 Lexus ES 300
Body Style: 4 dr sedan
Engine: 6 cyl, auto
Driveline: FWD
Mileage: 108,000
Color: Gray/gray
Major Options: sun roof, 6-disk CD changer, heated leather front seats, heated side mirrors, automatic seats w/ 2 driver memory, full size spare tire, vehicle alarm, safety
Condition:
Interior in great condition -- some wearing on leather, but mostly near perfect. Exterior has some minor body damage on front bumper and "road rash" on hood. Otherwise in good condition.
  4 relatively new - 20% worn
Recently passed inspection w/ no issues
Only recommended maintenance required at this time is to change transmission fluid
Other:
Was in one accident that resulted in the replacement of hood, left front quarter panel, and front bumper.

I know we got a good price on the vehicle we purchased. The trade in value I was offered initially was $4,000. I got them to come up to $5,000 and then took the offer. They currently have the vehicle listed on their site for $9,999 (which makes me laugh because when I told the sales guy I was sure they could sell it for $7,500 if they cleaned it up, he laughed and said they'd prob just dump it at auction.)

Here it is

I'm happy with the trade in value. KBB said fair was $3600 and good was $4500. So, should I be happy? Or was I had?

lizanneh,

Great job getting that trade-in value. What car did you get to replace it?

I have the same car exactly as yours, similar color even, at 99,500 miles. Looking at trading it in but a month ago, the radio, which sounds excellent still, suddenly just had its LCD display go blurry. Numbers are garbled and overlap some. This after the check engine light showed up recently. I was so bummed out that getting it fixed might cost so much and not worth doing at all. If I do not get it fixed though, it would significantly reduced its trade-in value.

Have you experienced this with your car? Thanks. BM

'...any idea how to counter the argument that KBB values the car less..."

You can always use the line a Chrysler salesman gave me when I quoted book values some years ago:

"Those books don't keep up with used car values. 5 year old Chryslers have been going UP in value lately"

If you can keep a straight face this might work.

Take it to Autozone, Pep Boys, or the like and have them read the trouble code - they'll do it for free. It may well be nothing more than an oxygen sensor. Regardless, as you say, a CEL can significantly impair a car's value.

Your car is a perfect craigslist candidate and will instantly bring more than any dealer will give you on trade.
