Actually, I think that if I ran a dealership (unlikely to ever happen) that I would actually be looking to leverage the service portion of the business in at least two ways. My understanding is that service departments generate significant income and profit.
 
First, I would want service dept. performance to also work toward bringing owners that did not purchase their vehicles here back for more service. And to generate generally positive word of mouth (write of internet?) regarding the service experience. And further, I’d be working with service performance toward encouraging customers that did not purchase their vehicle(s) here to give the sales side an opportunity, when the time does come . . .

Anybody know how Edmunds arrives at it's $30008 invoice price for a GLX 4Motion? My calculations give me a figure closer to $30911, with $28K as a base price GLX, $1073 for triptronic, and $1800 for 4Motion.

I read the weekly automotive trade journal, Automotive News, and for a while now they have shown that the dealer incentive on a Passat is $1,000. and the rebate is strictly limited to low cost financing, the lowest being 0.9 - 1.9%.
 
On the other hand if you check Edmunds you find there is a marketing incentive to the dealer of $2,000 so it is difficult to know which is true. I am inclined to rely on Automotive News because in most ways it seems to be the bible of the industry.
 
In the most recent issue they quoted S. California Toyota dealers who were complaining that although they sold lots of Camrays, they were not profitable sales, only bringing an average profit of $250 - $300 per car versus the Honda dealer who was averaging about $880.00 on each Accord sold.
 
It appears that the majority of people buying new, as part of the deal, also trade in a car, so when I see unusually low purchase prices I wonder if the buyer got socked on his trade-in, or bought a demo, or a used vehicle (out here we call them pre-driven)?

Moda - the loyalty deal does end May 1st - at least that deal. There may be another. I found out about it on-line at the Volkswagen site. I expect they'll continue the sale until the cars are gone. They still have quite a few to choose from, including a very nice GLX on the showroom floor with all the "goodies." 5% is on the "bottom line" price. I didn't take any extras like extended warranty. They didn't try to push them - only asked if I was interested. It's unlikely I'll go to their service department - there are three dealers nearby.

Aloha, any help assessing this deal would be much appreciated!
Looking at a GLS with leather, esp, automatic
Dealer MSRP shows 27,225
 
Will sell for 24,500 and provide 1.9% financing. This saves about 1K for me.
Trade value for my 2003 honda LX v-6 coupe with 11,110 miles is 17,000
 
Any impressions on this deal. I am in hawaii, but looking for advice on how favorable this deal is to mainland customers. Usually cars are about 1000-1500 more here.
 
2 more short questions, edmunds invoice seems lower than stated elsewhere, anyone else find this to be true.
Car I selected has brown painted pinstrip on it, is this standard? seems odd to see on new car (80 miles)Wondering if something is odd about this car..

I'm considering purchasing a 2001.5 Passat GLS 1.8T, about 39K miles. It's certified from my local VW dealer (the 2 yr/24K mile warranty). Having some anxiety over switching from Honda to VW and reading horror stories on these boards, can I take comfort in that warranty, or am I going to find out that "limited" means "very, very limited - bring your checkbook"? This seemed like the best place to post (as a buying experience), but I can post elsewhere if I need to. Thanks!

GLS Wagon with Manual Tranny & 4Motion by edelane

I just purchased a GLS Wagon with the 5 Speed Manual, 4Motion, cold weather pachage and leatherette seats. I was intially expecting to pay somewhat more than 26K before financing, but ended up with $24,682.70 (including taxes & destination sharge). I started looking for this particular Passat in Feburary this year, and it took around 2 months before a dealer (Ourisman in Laurel, MD) finally got a hold of one. So far, I'm a happy camper.

I had a similar bad experience with a new Jetta GLS. At 33 miles, the ESP light came on. Took it to the selling dealer and they had the car for a week. The service manager called back to say that they didn't know how to fix it and should contact VW of America for a new vehicle. After many calls to VW and the selling dealer, they some how managed to fix the problem. So during the 1st month of owning a new Jetta, it was in the shop more than actually being driven. For my troubles? I got a 100 gift certificate for VW for VW merchandise. At least all's well now- with 2500 miles on it. But sure left a bad first impression of my new car.

Is $16,700 a good price for this car? A local dealer advertises this price and has a few in stock. No options just base Passat.
