Hi. I'm looking at an '04 Passat Wagon, as you described, but need automatic transmission - everything else seems to be standard: sunroof, one-CD-at-a-time player (but it does have a cassette player, too, for Books on Tape!), cruise, etc. I am convinced that because I am a woman I am not getting anywhere near a good deal. The "invoice" I saw on this car was $29,823, and the best quote I have in hand so far is $27,950...a lot more than the $26350 you paid, even if I paid extra for the automatic transmission! I would like to get this car for $27,000. Is that realistic? (I live in NC, by the way. I think the cars come in at Wilmington - destination charge is $575.) Right now I have suspended this car purchase because I am in such a bad mood about the whole "game" that is being played on me, with MY money!

Regards,

Some of the price disparity may be due to our different locations (Baltimore/Washington v NC) and different demands for the automatic v manual.

I paid about invoice less $2230. Your best offer looks to be about invoice less $1900. In that context your offer does not look so bad. Carsdirect.com indicates that auto adds about $1100.

Much of my dealing (except for the final $500 or so) came through e-mail using the dealer's web sites and without any human contact. Then, I contacted several dealers by phone and determined what they would do in view of the best e-mail offer I had received.

Consider e-mailing a dealer you have not yet contacted, but remember there are advantages to a local dealer. How assertive have you been in determining the extent of dealer incentives and letting the dealer know you are aware of these incentives? (Edmunds, carsdirect) Will the dealers negotiate charges for plates etc.? The 26,350 number did not include these charges.

Best of luck-

Edmonds Invoice by btettemer

Anybody know how Edmunds arrives at it's $30008 invoice price for a GLX 4Motion? My calculations give me a figure closer to $30911, with $28K as a base price GLX, $1073 for triptronic, and $1800 for 4Motion.

Just bought 2004 Passat GLS Wagon in NY area for $23,916 before tax and registration/title/license with options:
-5-Speed Automatic w/Tiptronic & Overdrive
-Leather Package w/L
-California/NE Region Emissions Charge ($150)

Hope this help.
You may get a better price if you know how to negotiate.

Incentives begin and end at different periods and marketing support may vary between regions, so it is not always easy to compare prices paid for vehicles unless they are purchased about the same date in the same area. Last week I purchased a GLX sedan for $27,439 (MSRP - $31,430) which is about $1300 under invoice from a dealer 5 miles from my home who only handles VW. There appears to be a marketing incentive of $2,000 on this car and I did not expect to receive it all back. Incidentally, I live in the Chicago metro area. If a dealer pays something like $27,000 for a product he sure as heck is not going to be willing to take a $100 - 300 profit on its sale. He could sell appliances and do better than that. No, I am not a dealer but in my working days I owned an independent car rental company, bought and sold a lot of cars because of it, and got some insight into dealer operations.

Incidentally, I had two lower bids, one $400.00 less from a dealer 25 miles away from my home who handles VW and two other brands. The other was $300.00 less from an exclusive dealer about 15 miles away, but he then proceeded to low-ball me on the trade, making his final price higher. While the Naples dealer is clearly not the norm, if I owned a dealership I would be inclined to treat the person who bought from me better then the person that did not, which is a normal human reaction. No, I would not abuse the non-purchaser, but given equal needs, I would favor my buyer.

You can drive yourself crazy worrying about what someone else paid for the same item you want to buy, but amortized over a number of years, the difference is usually small.
