2000 GLS pricing in MA by usedpassat

I'm looking to buy used Passat, maybe a 2000 GLS automatic with about 45000 mi. Edmunds says such a vehicle has a retail dealer TMV of

$16,000 for outstanding condition
$15,400 for clean condition
$14,000 for average condition
$12,500 for rough condition

Looking online, I'm seeing several similar cars from Boston area dealers going for just under $12,000 - one is a GLS with leather heated seats. Should I assume there is something grossly wrong with these vehicles, or is there something wacky going on with Boston area used Passat prices? Thanks for your help!

You might want to ask Terry over in Real-World Trade-In Values about a few of these, see what he thinks. Pricing from Edmunds can be useful and can also be wacky.

We bought a 2003 GLX Wagon (Auto) with ESP in the Milwaukee Area two weeks ago for $520 under invoice. I requested quotes via email from local dealers and that was the best one. There was no haggling, and no hidden costs once I was in the showroom. They didn't offer much on a trade-in, but still a pretty good deal. A lot different than last fall when they were getting close to MSRP.

mikeburk, don't know if you're still considering a '03 GLX Sedan. I recently purchased a GLX 4Motion wagon from Bob Lewis VW in San Jose. They have a huge selection (Sonnen VW in San Rafael also seems to have a big selection). If you go through their internet sales guy, they pretty much aim for Edmunds TMV pricing (approx. $450 over invoice). Not bad for the Bay Area. However, if you don't go through their internet guy and deal with the floor salesmen, you'll find that they have the nerve to tack-on to all their window stickers a higher "Dealer MSRP" than the MSRP VW is asking. Lot's of B.S. from the salesmen about "demand". Absolutely absurd, since no other VW dealer in the Bay Area does that.

Well, yesterday I bought a GLX wagon with ESP in SC for 26900 not including the $300 SC sales tax - the total deal was 27200. This is 1800 under invoice with little negotiation. Does this sound right for all you new GLX wagon owners?

james_ca,...I checked inventory and prices with about 6 vw dealers in the Bay Area. I wound up buying from Bob Lewis because they had on hand exactly what I was looking for (GLX 4Motion wagon, w/ESP, blue silver, leather, etc.) at pretty much the price I was looking to pay. This was a little over a month ago, and at the time, Edmunds placed the TMV for the car at about $450 over invoice. Right now, Edmunds TMV has the same car for a hair UNDER invoice, which makes sense to me, as the '04 models will be here soon.
The price sschilf got for his wagon in SC is fantastic, I'd love to hear if anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area has gotten a similar deal.

I am in the market for a GLX Passat. For a 2003 I was just quoted a price of $26,876 (excluding taxes/license) $29,407- out the door Los Angeles Area. This seems like a very good price below edmunds of $27,318. Thoughts on whether I should snatch this beauty up or wait for the 2004's. Thanks.
