| just reread your message........that price DID not include sales tax, as I had to pay that when I got back to Maine and NH has no sales tax. | |

After a fair amount of due-dillegence, it seems to me that some of the best deals are available through internet managers. Just as I've seen on previous posts, you just send them an email stating the specs you want and they come back with a figure that you would otherwise only hear after some extensive haggling on the sales floor. My only question is, (for those of you who might be more acquainted with this approach than I), do internet managers usually provide a bottom-line, or near bottom-line, quote in order to move cars more effectively and efficiently? Or, do you still have wiggle room to negotiate the price down further? In my case, I requested a quote for a 2003 GLS 1.8T Manual, with Lthr, Cold Weather, Monsoon, and Homelink -- all specifically requested in Silverstone Gray ext. / Black int. The dealer responded within a few hours several times, on a Sat. no-less, with a selling price offer of $23,194 -- nearly $300 below invoice, right off the first pitch -- and an 'out-the-door' price of $24,793. Also, I'm curious about a 'processing fee' of $220. I know that destination charge, port fees, and a few others may be arguably bogus. But this 'processing fee' sounds suspiciously like a dealer-prep. fee, (i.e. another way for the dealer to fatten his/her wallet.) Any thoughts on this deal, along with the curious 'processing fee'? Thanks in advance, and Kudos to all who make this discussion board a truly valuable resource! |

| I read alot of tips on car buying and getting the best deal, I also used a worksheet on carbuyingtips.com to come up with what I thought was a fair price......I also wrote to this board several times. Then I wrote to all the internet managers that were located a reasonable distance from me. It took only one or two emails to get them to the out-the-door price that I felt was a fair one (maybe, I could have gotten a better deal if I'd kept haggling, but I HATE TO DICKER). I told them I didn't care what they added for fees as long as the bottom line price when I got there to sign the papers was what they quoted me. It worked like a dream and I ended up paying the exact amount I thought I should. Hope this helps.........Pat | |

A major magazine is looking to interview recent and current car-shoppers who are/were willing to wait for the right incentive before buying a new vehicle...if you care to participate, please send your daytime contact information and brief comments to jfallon |

I am about to buy a silver GLX Wagon Auto with ESP. Living in the heart of Silicon Valley I have not ventured into a showroom since some "delightful" experiences during the dot.com bubble - along the lines of being asked to give up your first born just for just test driving any German car. Here's what I have put together based on the many helpful posts: Invoice - Base model: 27,910 - ESP: 247 - Destination: 575 - Sub-Total I: 28,732 Expected Dealer Fees - Port Prep: 25 - Wholesale (Floor) Finance Reserve: 142 - Advertising Association: 177 - Sub Total II: 29,106 Finance Terms - No trade in - Use 1.9 finance option - Deduct 500 incentive from invoice - Give hold back of about 600 to dealer - Do not pay any other fees (documentation prep etc) - Pay taxes and license plus registration fees Putting all together I would be at a 28,606 payment to dealer plus tax plus license / registration, while using the 1.9% offer. Two quick questions: - Is this realistic given location and current sales/inventory movements? The least I want to do is haggeling for weeks with car salesman. - Is this an offer I should pitch as is to close-by internet managers? Many thanks in advance, Frank C |

I am about to buy a 2000 GLX V6 with leather and all the extras, except the CD player, for 19,130. It has 33750 miles and is pretty clean. Does this sound about right? The TMV price is 19,717. Thanks Paul |

The actual Invoice for this Passat GLX Wagon with ESP is $29,076.00. The $500 Customer Loyalty Voucher is only valid with a current DMV Registration for any Volkswagen, regardless of condition. And it is not necessary to trade this car in either...just show proof of ownership. And I have advised people to simply use it as part of the Down Payment. |

Thanks for the information. I used the edmunds.com information for calculating the base invoice (not TMV). Could you please let me know why your invoice is above the one I researched (GLX Wagon with Auto and ESP)? Thanks again, Frank |

Currently, I am think of purchasing a used 2000 VW Passat GLX. The car is fully load, everything that I am looking for, sunroof, disk brakes, tinted windows, etc. The car is sweet!!!! My only problem the car has 64K in mileage and the dealer is asking $15,900. Does this sound reasonable. I also checked Carfax, no accident, it was a leased car and only had one prior owner. I checked Edmonds rating on the car, and some people love the cars others want to set fire to the automobile. I have had my heart set on the VW Passat, but now I don't know...should I buy used or wait and purchase a left over 2003 at the end of the summer. Please people give me some guidance on this issues!!!! |
