rattle and hum by cipolini

i purchased a cert pre owned in december of 02. it's 99 528 ita with about 43k. it's been a wonderful car so far, except for the annoying set of rattles coming from the back end. has anyone experienced the same problems with wagons? would anyone characterized this problem as systemic for this type of car? any advise on what's the best to way proceed? can i go back to bmw and demand that it be fixed at no cost? i find out unfathomable that a car with such a price tag would rattle as much after only 40k.

Hey Mario-
I have a 99 540iTa. No rattles or noises in the rear, except when I am hauling things. I definitely would persue having the dealer look at the car. Be firm.

Considering a used '93 525iT Wagon by mchong1

I'm a grad student in the market for a second car. I would be interested in hearing from any current owners (or anyone with knowledge/experience) about their 525 wagon. The car I'm looking at has 93K miles (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&cat- egory=6008&item=2413576439&rd=1).
How much would you pay for this car?

Also, when do these typically need a major overhaul (I think for most cars, stuff starts breaking/needing replacement between 100-125k?). Is it safe to assume that with about $1.5k investment, we can drive it until 150k miles?

Thanks in advance for your help and wisdom!

If you are a grad student, I assume that you are on a limited budget. BMW parts and service cost big bucks. You could easily have one failure that could eat up $1500. Even if it is relatively reliable, maintenance costs will be high, due to the cost of parts and labor.

Happy owner of a 1999 540i Touring by pierredeux

50 000 miles and still the very happy driver of my 1999 540i Touring w/Sports package and enhanced audio system.
Beside the stupid sliding front armrest and cup holders, nothing has proven to be wrong with this car so far!
Often drive from Montréal to NYC and always a pleasure. (Please fellow Americans, don't stay glued on the left lane at 60 mph!!))))
Only the A6 Allroad and a re designed X5 (or upcoming X7?) would be a alternative choice to me when reaching 100k miles ! Not sure the 2005 5 series wagon will look that good....?

Down East Trip Report by mod62

I just returned from a 1,500 mile jaunt to Maine. It was a great trip and especially enjoyable to really open up my 525iT 5 speed on the newly paved Coastal Maine Roads. The only down side is that I kept wishing BMW would bring the 530iT with 5 speed or the 540 with stick to the USA. I love Wagons and it was great to average 27 mpg over the entire trip in all kinds of driving conditions and still be able to haul a ton of stuff (which our sedan brethern can't do!). It was also fun to keep increasing my average speed and not having to be told to slow down!
I also saw two very cool old wagons; a '69 Volvo with over 400,000 miles and a '62 Buick Special on Isle Au Hait

Rear window drip by tlmmhowell

Does anyone have rear window drip? Usually happens when it is hot. I read somewhere that if you put a couple pin holes in the washer resevior cap, that will fix it. Not for mine.

New Wagon by mod62

Thanks for the shot Revka. I have an '02 wagon and this is the first shot I have seen of the E60 design. I like it much better than the new sedan.

I though the wagon was coming out as an '05. Any idea about engine size availability and what will be in stick?

The only complaint i have about my current tourer is that I could only get the 525 in a stick.

Thanks

Looks like a Pontiac wagon to me. Also, what makes BMW think they can do even more complicated features when they still can't fix problems with the features on current models? The more I see the E60 pictures, the more convinced I am the current ride will be my last-unless I buy a E34!
