Allrighty then! I'm back from my honeymoon and I turned the '97 over 100K this week. I got it to pass inspection even without changing the airbags. I bought two tires (correct size 175/70R13) for the front and also got the windshield and passenger window replaced. Now the only problems that remain are the obvious body damage, the broken driver's outside door handle, the missing back seat, and the missing passenger door panel.

I have been shopping for a new vehicle with the insurance settlement I will be receiving at some point whenever they get around to it. I am choosing between a new 2000 Protege DX 5-speed in silver for $11,600, a new 2001 Accent GS 5-speed in gray for $9594, and a used 1998 Integra sedan 5-speed with 43K in silver for $10,988. Stephanie's 1998 Integra hatchback automatichas 42K on it now and is doing well.

My troubles with the local Dallas-Fort Worth Hyundai dealers are few. Buz Post is difficult to deal with and he won't trade his Hyundais with other dealers. Allen Samuels and Eckert are small dealers. Freeman is a good dealer, they just don't have a gray GS (they have blue and reD), and Huffines is fine but they only have red and green. I haven't been to any others yet.

I am only interested in the Protege for the 24 months 0% interest financing. $3000 down and $400 a month for 24 months and I own it. Of course it will not be worth much as a 2 year old car with 120K-140K on it, but neither will any other.

#323 of 1769 Long time gone but I am still here.. by photog0264

Hello everyone I don't suppose you remember me but I am the ZX2er who lost a ZX2 in a major accident about 5 months back. Then in a tribute to my belated car that saved my life. I replaced it with another Ford Escort ZX2.

Now here I am 5 months later and compliments of a cop who lied in court, have a massive insurance premium and with little chance of getting what I had hoped to be a second car anytime soon. In my evaluations if you remember I had seriously considered the Accent. You will also remember I remarked it came in as a close economic runner up to the ZX2.

I am still mournfull of my failed plans especialy when I realized that the New Accent has improved 105hp engine. This was further ilustrated on a recent test drive of one. Granted it is no match in performance for the ZX2, but 105hp is certainly respectible. Damn that would have been perfect for me a 2+2 Econo Sports coupe, and a hard work comfortable econo hatchback zip box. It would have been so perfect to the extent that it is now relegated to my "distant future plans list" in about two to three years (which is about how long it will take my insurance to settle down). Which brings me to my current question.

Does anybody know of any AMATUER webpages covering the Hyundai Accent? They seem to be even rarer than those covering the ZX2.

#324 of 1769 99 Accent 4dr & 01 Accent 2dr by perry40

Hi! My wife drives a silver 99 Accent 4dr automatic, has had it for 21 months. The car has 22,000 kms on it. So far it's been a good vehicle, with only a few minor problems (all of which have been fixed under warranty) ... namely the "check engine" light, caused by a faulty vent valve in fuel system, which also caused the car to be hard to fill with gasoline (the fill nozzle would shut-off repeatedly) and a defective horn. At the next service check I'll get the Dealer to check the brakes, as the pedal is a little mushy and also I've noticed a small rust break-out on the bottom edge of the trunk lid ... a car less than 2 years old shouldn't have any rust! I drive a 2001 black Accent 2dr automatic which is very nice and only a week old. The redesign is beautiful! My only complaint is that the engine seems noisier than in my wife's 99. Otherwise, the Accent(s) are a decent value.

Do you notice any difference in power between your 99 and 01 Accents? Just curious if the new 1.6 liter had any noticeable power gains over the 1.5. You would be the perfect person to ask since you own both! Would appreciate any input you could provide.

No doubt, the 01 Accent feels like it has more power than the 99 ... seems to idle much smoother as well. Though, as I stated in my previous post, the 01's engine seems noisier ... particularly when in the first 2 gears ... becomes noticably quieter when overdrive kicks in.

#327 of 1769 interior air filter by lngtonge18

Jan 22, 2001 (11:51 pm)

I was looking at scheduled maintenance that I might be closing in on now that I have 12,200 trouble free miles, and I noticed that the book says to replace the interior air filter at 9000 miles. How important do you guys think this replacement is and has anyone done it yet? How much was the filter since you probably have to buy it from the dealer? How hard is it to replace? Would appreciate any insight. Otherwise, I guess I have no maintenance to worry about until the car turns 30,000 miles, which is far away.
Also, the engine finally seems to have broken in fully. It revs much more freely now and the fuel economy seems to have leveled off at a constant 28 mpg in all city driving. The acceleration also has become more pleasing, even with the AC on. I recently got a comment by my partner's boss that my car looks like a mini-Mercedes. He was quite shocked to learn it was a 10K Hyundai. My boss stated that my darkly tinted wondows combined with the black color makes my car look real sporty. It made me beam with pride I never dreamed I would get nice comments about my little Hyundai.

#328 of 1769 Parking Brake Light by guym1

Thanks Ingtonge18, It was the Brake Fluid, seems like the French owners manual has more info regarding this that the English one!

-----------MSG ----------
The light does have one other function, to warn you of low brake fluid. If the fluid level is near the low mark, as you drive around, the fluid may be sloshing around just enough to turn the light on and off. Check the fluid, sounds like that could be your problem. Or you may have a defective sensor in the brake fluid reservoir. Hope that helps.

#329 of 1769 Replacing the interior air filter... by aldag

This is not hard to do. Takes about 30 minutes total. The glove compartment and glove compartment support bar comes out first, held in with a few screws. Then release the outside air flapper control wire, it crosses in front of the filter door, and must be moved up and out of the way. Now pop open the air filter door. Slide the old filter out and the new filter in. You can spray some room freshner in there if you want. Now reverse the process to reassemble and you are in business!
