Visiting friends just north of Houston - Daughter and her family were here to swim and visit along with another friend I worked with for years near here. Friends' daughters and a couple of their grandchildren also here. The friends own 33 acres which backs up to the San Jacinto River. At the river there is an observation deck on the bank which has an overlook of about 25-30 feet above the riverbed. Daughter and her family and friends' daughters walked to the river. Daughter was taking pictures as they went. A Piper Cub flew over from the small airfield nearby. The plane flew down low to the river and daughter was still taking pictures. They thought the plane would turn and come back and she was waiting to take more pics of it. Then they heard a BAM and then silence. Friends' daughters ran to the river. One has some medical training. My daughter hustled her kids back to the house. Next thing you know we had helicopters, ambulances, fire trucks, etc. swarming out here in the woods. It was about 7:30 in the evening. At least someone saw what happened and got help quickly because this is a REMOTE area and had the plane not been seen it may not have been known for quite awhile that it had crashed. The plane may have had some engine troubles and the pilot may have been trying to land on the flat bank next to the river. At any rate, he caught some low power lines over the river which flipped the plane upside down and straight to the ground. The pilot was taken out in an ambulance. His son was taken out by helicopter. The news stories I can find this morning say that they have cuts and bruises, but otherwise are fine. Replies to this message: rsholland (Jul 13, 2009 5:41 am)

Replying to: ladywclass (Jul 13, 2009 5:05 am) I remember, years ago—like when I was in college, I was with some friends traveling up the NJ turnpike, when I happened glance over to my left only to see a small plane in the distance sputter (fly erratically) and then suddenly dive nose-first towards the earth. Didn't see the crash, nor did I ever see anything in the paper or on the news about it. Bob

Replying to: ateixeira (Jun 29, 2009 7:31 am) This morning at 11:30, Dina went to Doggie Heaven...she is no longer suffering. Susan flew down from Connecticut to be with her these last few days; we all said goodbye to our sweet,sweet, Dina, and I held her and kissed the top of her head as the vet did the injections. After she was gone, I held her a bit more and then let her fly. Finished my second STP this weekend (Bike ride from Seattle to Portland) and as usually the aid cars were provided by Subaru. At the finish line they had a new Outback- it is HUGE! It sure seems much bigger than the current outback- it must be pretty similar in size to the Toyota Venza? Not sure, I might have still been lightheaded from the bike ride! Anyway, it seems pretty solid but maybe too big now. Replying to: tsy (Jul 14, 2009 11:43 am) Believe it or not Tom, The new Outback is actually about an inch shorter than the '09 model! Yes, it's taller and wider, and has a ton more space inside thanks to the increased wheelbase. The front and rear overhangs have been reduced. The Legacy is a bit longer than last year's model, but not by much, 2 or 3 inches I think. I've driven several new Legacys and Outbacks, and they're really nice cars, much improved on the out-going models. I especially like the Legacy GT, with the 6-speed. The man and boy were released from the hospitals on the next day - both with just cuts and bruises. I found it interesting that they were from the town where my parents live which is about 50-60 miles away on the other side of Houston.
