I swapped keys with the Miata owner Friday afternoon. Basically the deal was done, contingent on the Miata passing my county's IM/smog test (no emissions testing in his county). The owner was great and the Miata ran strong. Unfortunately Saturday morning, on the way to the IM station, the check engine light came on and it threw off a cylinder misfire and a cat code. Maybe just a gas cap issue but it scared me off.

So, after spending about $50 an a Carfax and the testing fee, I had a fun rental for a day I guess, but wound up swapping keys back midday yesterday. The guy had washed the Outback and figured out which dip switch turned off my flaky alarm system, so that was nice of him. I filled up the Miata on the way back to his place.

His '97 was a lot rougher than mine. Lots of dings and scratches and worn carpet and interior bits. But it sure was fun to tool around in.

I doubt she'll go for it. She was lukewarm about the '04's drive character, and the new one is more sedate. I'm trying to get her used to the fact that the the MINI is unusual in this respect, with a price to match. But she's fixated on it- juuust big enough, a blast to drive, and great mpg (it's a consumption thing for her, not a cost thing, so the premium issue doesn't resonate)

I am sorry to hear that it did not work out, Steve, but at least the timing on those codes was spot on! I'm sure it would be disappointing to end up with a bunch of gremlins to chase down had it passed inspection only to fail in reliability....

They still don't offer the 2.0l engine in the 5 door Mazda3. I have no idea why - you can get it in the sedan.

There are 800,000 Miatas on the road so take your time finding the right one.

Try to find one that was cared for like your Outback was.

The Miata probably just needed spark plug wires, they eat those every 30,000 miles like clockwork.

And if the Miata doesn't eat them, the rodents will!

Cheers!

Well, yeah, but I'm going on 3 or 4 years of looking. Pretty casual looking I admit. We're having perfect roadster weather here too. Followed an old MG yesterday for several miles and a classic red ~'55 Corvette passed by going the other direction.

Let me know if you see a BRG one with tan top & interior, cruise and heated seats (love the top down but I'm cold natured and I was freezing half the time on the overnight test).

Oh yeah, the owner had just replaced the plugs and wires in the last couple of months.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. (We'll leave the light on for you Wes).

Thanks! I talked with my wife yesterday, and she is willing to do the "L" when headed back to Alaska. So, looks like we will be passing through that area after all.

BRG? What is that?

I have a coworker here in Fairbanks who was looking to sell her Miata a couple years back, but I think she changed her mind at the time. It is in amazing condition, but she also wanted a fair chunk of change for it at the time ($8,000 IIRC). Hers id one of the special editions, not sure which year, but it id burgundy with a tan top, manual (are Miatas made with autos?).

BRG = British Racing Green

From the days when there were national colours for race cars from each country.

France - Blue
Italy - Red
Germany - Silver
etc.
