Wow, that brings back memories!!!!

Nice job juice, but Mario must add quite a bit of drag!

As multiple time winner of the Pinewood Derby I can now reveal the secret to my success was lubricating the axles with graphite powder.

Nothing like free-wheeling!

Tom
Thats exactly what I wrote on his facebook page, as well as wondering why it wasn't blue.

That's what I wanted to do, but my son is really into his Nintendo games so building a car for Mario was his call.

My daughter was jealous and wanted to build a green car for Yoshi.

Maybe I'll buy a few more kits, including one for me. I even have the Subaru stickers.

Yes, all "children wanted this" excuses aside, you should have made your own. Thank goodness they didn't demand you make a Chrysler : then we'd have to banish you ; )

Ahh Serge, you know what they say about great minds. . .

I still remember one of the fastest pinewood derby cars I raced against- they were ugly! Totally flat except the back where all the extra weight was mounted as high as possible.

Those ugly cars smoked everyone.

Funny the things we remember. . .

That would have been slow and unreliable.

The hole where Mario sits is strategically sized - a quarter fits in there perfectly.

To race you can go up to 5 ounces, so we'll insert quarters until it's up to the limit, then race it.

I put the weight in the center, but I guess high and far back would have been better?

Oh well.

Advice from someone beaten senseless as a Cub Scout, then again as a Cub Scout father:

1) Make sure you are at maximum weight

2) Low and flat-- small frontal area

3) Graphite for the wheels/axles

4) Make sure wheels are aligned. Most Boy Scout stores even sell a little alignment kit. If you push it on the floor and it doesn't track exactly straight, you'll have drag on the track. Once it's aligned, do not touch or put pressure on the wheels, until you are ready to race..

We had fun making our car... but, that's about it..

I may get the graphite but I think I'll avoid going nuts on this and just leave it as a fun activity.

I'll be happy if the car gets attention from the other kids and people compliment my son on his car.
