I have an update for my review of Uptown Motors in Milwaukee, WI... I went in to talk more about pricing and purchase vs. lease options with my dealer, but the salesman I had been working with wasn't there, so I spoke with the sales manager....WHAT A SLIMEBALL ( I won't mention names but I think his first initial was Perry). I was given a good price by the salesman and by a callback I had received on an online quote (ironically enough, from the same dealer), and the sales manager was running numbers that were a good $2000 higher!!! When I caught the "error", he just told me he thought the first price was too low, "just a dollar over invoice". (and we all know that they still make a bunch of money). I said I would come back the next day and speak with the salesman, Jeff. When I told Jeff what had happened, and that I was a bit upset and considering going to another dealer, he made amends rather quickly, giving me my first price and knocked a couple hundred bucks off, plus threw in a year of oil changes, car washes, yadda yadda. Beleive it or not, when the Sales Manager saw the final deal (I ended up leasing so the deal went through the leasing manager instead), he actually YELLED at the salesman - I could hear him all the way out on the showroom floor!!! Just wanted to share the story - I got the last laugh, but yet another warning to everyone to CHECK the dealers numbers!!! |

| I took my Dark Tourmaline V-6, MTX cat in to West Point Lincoln Mercury in Houston for an oil change today, and while I was waiting, I checked out the show room. Sitting in the show room in all its splendor is a 2000 Rousch (sp) Cougar, Black, V-6 Convenience group with an AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND NO SPORT GROUP. I couldn't believe it. Some dealers just don't get it. Who in their right mind would buy a $3325.00 add on package to a cat with an automatic and no Sport Group? | |

Dealer's don't get to pick what cars they will get from the factory most times, and a crummy combination like that would have been foisted off on them by their district manager, looking for a home for that mismatch. The dealer that I bought my car from (Rothrock of Trexlertown, PA) had had "my" Cougar sitting in his lot from September of 1999 until March of 2000--so even the good ones may sit for a while. Of course, I opted for the automatic, but that is a quirk of mine--I like to have both hands free on high speed peelouts from busy intersections. Trying to steer hard and shift seems unduly dangerous to me, and I have to make a very chancy turn every time I go to work. So, maybe someday a happy person will see that car and say "I want it!" but I can't imagine that they will want to pay the price for it. What does the Rousch package get you, anyway? |

| I would like to second stageleft's opinion of cherner LM in annandale, VA. Only had a little problem with the sales manager, but the salesman was GREAT! I would definitely buy a car there again. I would also recommend this dealer to anyone in the DC area. A lot less pain than the other dealerships I went around to. | |
| Hey Jayhawk, who was your salesman? I had John Roberts. | |

My salesman was Bill Begel. He was really great. I wasn't to thrilled with the sales manager though. He definitely rubbed me the wrong way. |

| I lease a blazer and Explorer. The lease is up on the Blazer and I test drove a 2000 Cougar and I think am in love. I have been checking out leases on the Cougar and its the same lease price as the blazer (333.00). I also called a dealer who is trying to get me to purchase a Olds Alero stating its faster than the cougar and at a better price. I need to know is the cougar worth the money and is it a practical choice. Is it going to be like a ford (fix or repair daily or found on the road dead). Help I need advice | |

Lennard: Interesting Comparison, an Alero and a Cougar. Other people have been in your shoes before, and we (the CSG) have helped them with their decision. If your looking for a sport Coupe that is great fun to drive, and will attract TONS of attention, go for the Cougar. If you looking for a sporty sedan to cart around the wife and kids, go for the Alero (actually I would go with a Contour and not an Alero, but that's just me). I'm not sure where the Olds dealer got his information from, but the Alero and the Automatic V6 Cougar have almost the same performance numbers. - Edmunds Stats - Olds Alero GL3 Coupe - Automatic Trans: 0-60mph = 7.8 seconds 60-0mph braking distance: 138 Feet 3.4L V6 170hp 200 lbs of Torque Weight = 2958 Pounds Cougar V6 - Automatic Trans: 0-60mph = 7.8 Seconds 60-0mph Braking Distance = 125 Feet 2.5L V6 170hp 165 lbs of Torque Weight = 2892 Pounds As you can see, the two cars are just about neck and neck, but there is one thing that really sets them apart performance wise. The Cougar V6 is available with a 5 speed manual transmission, and the Alero is not. The Cougar V6 with a 5 speed manual runs about 7.1 seconds in the 0-60mph sprint, and this option truly makes the car a Sports Coupe. The Cougar is built on the world proven Mondaeo platform, and uses the Duratec V6, which is also world proven. The two of these combined with the killer looks of the Cougar form one hell of a car. Looks, reliability, and performance for a GREAT price. What else could one ask for? I'm not up on lease pricing. I have never leased and I never plan on leasing. I paid $17,500 for my cat (Black, V6, MTX, Sports and conv. packages, ABS, Polished Wheels, Alarm, Midnight black cloth interior, sunroof). The average price for a similar Cat is usually around $18,000. Don't let your dealer sucker you in to paying much more. As for the Olds dealer, what do you expect? He is selling Aleros, its his job to tell you that it is a better car. But we know better. 8-) PS - You should join us in the main CSG conference area: Cougar Support Group - A New Start And be sure to check out the CSG home page: |

Lennard -- Alero was my second choice behind the Cougar when I was test driving. It sure is a lot of car for the money, no doubt about it, but: The Cougar is better for hauling things (maybe not people) because of the hatch. Cougar brakes are much much much better. As is typical with GM cars (or so I've found) the Alero brakes are soft and mushy. The Cougar handling/suspension is tighter, or so I thought. I don't recall whether or not I drove a sport package Alero, but I can tell you it wasn't nearly as much fun on a twisty road. Looks: Cougar 10, Alero 2.5 |

| I just bought my cougar (5/29) from a licoln-mercury dealership in madison. My salesman was great, but i didn't care for the sales manager much. We actually got in our car (the one we came in) and started the engine before the salesman came back out and was ready to deal. I paid 18,000 for a laser red cougar off the lot. That included tax, title, license, a 6yr/72,000 mile powertrain warranty and undercoating. Sticker price for the car was 19,655. So far I love it! | |
