iv had my 99 cougar for alittle under a year. When the midwest flooded pretty bad a few weeks ago, i had to have my alt replaced. After that, when i give it full throttle in a race or whatever, i have my batt light flashing at me. when i took it back to have it checked out, they couldnt figure out and all they could tell me was that my car was prolly getting to much power at a heavy acceleration.Anyone have words one that? anything would be helpful

Same Old Problems !!! by jayejames

So . . . I'm back. I own a 1999 Mercury Cougar. I've always had a problem with the CEL. Well, it was suggested to me that I should change the spark plugs. I did that. No results. I still have that same old problem, the CEL. I ran out of ideas a very long time ago. Not to mention the fact that I still haven't solved the problem with my power windows. I don't know anymore. Seriously, if there is anyone that can help, please respond. I'll check back soon. Thanks.

Sunroof Dilemma by wildcougar

My sunroof will not completely close on one side. I took to two places and was told it could run around $1400 to replace it because I guess there is no easy way to fix it unfortunately. I took it to a ford dealer to get them to at least get it to shut and they couldn't do it. Any suggestions on how I can close it??? It's not a problem until it rains. Thanks

2000 Cougar Timing Belt by richard7

I just bought a used 2000 w/110,000 miles. Should I replace the timing belt? Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if it's already been replaced? Also, the check engine light stays on. I believe this could be a sensor issue. Any way to tell? Thanks.

I can't help with the power window problem as I have not encountered that ...yet! However, I do own a 1999 Cougar with a 2.5 Duratec. The check engine light was on and off for a while then on constantly. It depends on what code it is throwing as to what is wrong with it. Mine was throwing PO400 which is a lean condition on one of the cylinder banks. I Purchased some Lucas fuel system treatment and within one tank of gas, the problem was fixed. Before I bought the code reader, I had tried several other injection system cleaners, to no avail. The Lucas product really worked for my situation. Incidentally, my MPG was improved as well. By the way, I get 35 MPG on the highway, at 70 MPH. The car gets 41 MPG at 55 MPH. I think this is real good numbers for a car that can somewhat perform when needed. I hope this helps. Lancasterench

1999 Cougar Stereo problems by lancasterench

Does anyone have a 1999-2000 cougar that the audio system is temperature sensitive. When the inside cabin temperature is hot, the audio system does not work. However, once the AC is on for a few minutes, the cabin cools down and the audio system "comes on". My only hypothesis is that there must be a crack in the circuitry that expands and contracts depending on the temperature. Can anyone expand or otherwise explain why this is occuring? Lancasterench

Can anyone advise how to manually close the sunroof on 2002 Mercury Cougar? The sunroof is open and will not close. The motor does not make a sound and the fuse is ok... Any suggestions? Thanks
