#746 of 3674 Chevy Problems by inadler

In response to #745, I have a 1995 Chevy Blazer LT. If that intermittent clunking noise you have is under the floor of the passenger foot area, then it is a badly designed exhaust pipe that is striking the bottom of your truck according to my mechanic (who is really good). He even asked me if I had my catalytic converter replaced (which I have)and he said that the GM mechanic did not put the right exhaust pipe on. He referred me to a muffler shop who specializes in custom exhaust pipes. I haven't replaced it yet but will in the near future. Also, I have the same problem as you with the check engine light coming on and it is from the gas filler cap. I have had so many problems with this vehicle from ball joints, brakes wearing fast, 3 fuel injectors, etc. that this will be my last GM product ever. Although, I do have 160,000 miles on the vehicle it still is poorly made especially compared to my nissan vehicles I have.

#747 of 3674 ABS problem w/ 96 Blazer LT by ault

Well we've decided to fix the ABS module (approx $1500). We are hoping that the transmission does not go bad, but after reading several posts, I have my doubts:( I have read a few posts w/ people having problems w/ their ABS back in '01, are there any more recent problems? We've had many problems - AC compressor ($700- still needs replaced), gas cap caused SES light (got cap free, but paid 3 separate garages about $250), rotors/brakes, heater core, etc. I'm sure there's more, I just can't remember! We do like this vehicle (obviously, we still have it), but I look forward to a less troublesome vehicle if there is such a thing.

Well, just for the fun of it, I thought I would glance at this thread, even though I traded in my '96 Blazer back in Jan '02 for a new Tahoe.

All I can say is WOW! I am surprised with the problems people are having. I am so happy to have been spared at least most of above owners' grief!

I have owned three of these midsize GM S10/15-based SUV's- -the first was a brand new '87 S10 Blazer 2dr, replaced by a new '92 GMC Jimmy 4dr, which was then replaced with the '96 4dr. All were 4x4's; the '87 had a 2.8 V6/5sp manual drivetrain, while the later two had the 4.3 V6/4sp auto setup.

I put a combined total of 450,000 miles on these three rigs, with that total pretty much evenly split among them. As I recall, on the '87 I replaced the clutch once, and on the '92 I had one of the engine valve seals replaced under warranty (exhaust smoke on startup 30k miles- -cured). On the '96, I replaced the ball joints at 60K miles, and their Moog replacements were still tight at trade-in/150k miles. Oh yes, there were a few minor things...like having to shim up the rattling door panels on the '92, and dealing with the typical squeaking back hatch glass. But those problems were cured easily with the aformentioned shims (for the '92) and a one time shot of vaseline for the back glass latch (for all three). Following those fixes, all three rigs were solid and tight with no interior noises, even after 150,000 miles apiece and occasional off roading. But beyond the above issues, and the usual replacement of tires, shocks, etc, these vehicles were fantastic! The 4.3 engines provided good power and gas mileage, and the '96 ('95 redesign) was better in almost every way, with one memorable exception, than the earlier design. The exception was turning radius. My '87 and '92 could turn on a dime; the '96 was relatively disappointing.

Oh, I also have a '97 S10 4.3/auto pickup with 100,000 miles and no rattles to be found. And it continues to serve well on our farm.

Anyway, just thought I would relate my experience, too! Very interesting thread!

#749 of 3674 1998 Blazer problems! by vf99

I have a 98 Blazer and it's just been one problem after another this year. I had to replace the fuel pump (the Blazer died on me at a stoplight), also replaced the thermostat this year and now the biggie - replaced the engine. It had a cracked engine block, there was exhaust blowing into the radiator. So, I'll be looking into a new car soon! Oh, and last year I had the wiper unit replaced too because it was very unpredictable and had a mind of its own. I also hear rattling inside which I don't know where it's coming from. I won't ever buy a Chevy/GM again!!

A buddy of mine is having a creaking sound come from under his 99 Blazer. This sound is occurring while accelerating and seems to go away when coasting. This creaking sound does not occur while braking (the sound occurrs as long as he is going forward). Also, going over bumps does not make the problem any worse of better. Any help/ideas/suggestions is appreciated.

I test drove a 99 blazer that had a god awful noise (sqweek) coming from under it. It turned out to be the lower balljoint on the driver side. Once it was fixed it rode great so I bought it. I'm told that there was an inhouse recall on the lower balljoints (not made to the public), I will investigate further & post what I find out.

#752 of 3674 2000 Jimmy Transmission by redsfan

In response to #694, I have a 2000 Jimmy that lost reverse and the even numbered gears. The repair guy told me some shield inside the transmission breaks rather easily. Pre-2001 GMC didn't use hardened steel on this shield and is not uncommon for them to break. When he does repairs, if the shield is not broken, he automatically replaces it because it will break soon enough. Sounds like they didn't improve the problem enough on the '01 models.

I have a 99 Blazer and i was just wondering if anyone knew how to solve the problems of the flickering headlights, and how to turn the lights off during the day?

#755 of 3674 Interior Noises by morency

Hello everyone! I have just recently purchased a 2000 4dr Jimmy. I was wondering if anyone has had problems with the cheap plastic molding on the doors....mine on the front driver's and passenger side is constantly making noise. What can be done?
