#8569 of 9498 Extended Insurance: Penske or Lexus?
Jun 03, 2005 (8:50 pm)
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me answer this question:
I am driving a 2001 RX 300 which runs great generally but does require an occasional trip to the service station.
Right now I am torn between two extended warranty plans so hopefully you can help me decide:
Penske offers a bumper to bumper warranty for the duration of either 7 years or 75k miles, whichever comes earlier, with $50 deductible payment for $2112.
Lexus offers a bumper to bumper warranty for the duration of 100k miles or 7 years, whichever comes earlier, no deductible payments required, for $2150.
Both warranties provide temporary Lexus vehicles while the car is in shop.
Please let me know what you think and whether you had any experience with either of these two extended warranty plans.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks to both of the May 29 writers. I think the ringing sound is different from my problem. I hear the chirping - it sounds just like a bird - at the time the car starts up. Last week we thought we'd pegged it to the a/c, as it seemed to stop when we turned the a/c off, but this week that doesn't work. Read on this site that some info that makes me think it may be brake-related. Will have that checked and report back if I learn anything.

Bought a used one in Dec 2003 with 58K for my wife It has been a great vehicle, put together fine, drives great, and have had no issues with it. This Lexus has the most solid brakes I have ever seen. As much as we love it, since It can't pull anyting......... it needs to go!!
Bought a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT sport. although it will never come close to RX 300 level of refinement, it is bigger, wider, has decent room, and drives surprisingly smooth for its truck- based chassis.
I will never hesitate to buy another RX300 or RX330 if our needs change in the future. The key to any used vehicle is to determine how well it was maintained by prior owners. RX300/RX330 are great looking vehicles.

I just wanted to thank you guys for saving me $300.00. I followed the advice here and removed the MAF (a job that would take a 90 year old woman 5 minutes), I shot it with choke cleaner, blew it off and put it back in. I removed a battery cable for 30 seconds to reset the light and I'm good as new. I spent about 5 minutes under the hood and didn't spend a time to fix what my friendly Lexus dealer wanted to charge me $300.00 parts only!
#8573 of 9498 Lighter and power outlet dead
Jun 06, 2005 (7:26 am)
The cigarette lighter on the front dash and the power outlet in the center console are dead in my 1999 RX. The fuses were fine but I changed them anyway, no luck. I checked each outlet with a volt meter to verify that there is no power coming in, I did this when the car was running. The third outlet in the back works.
Is there a way I can replace either simply? Any advice is welcomed. Thanks.
#8574 of 9498 12v Receptacle

This applies to the rear outlet but I presume the front and console outlets are the same:
To release the 12v receptacle, locate a small rectangular hole in the metal shell at about 1:00 - 5/8" in from the rim, press the plastic tab to release the shell and pull it out until it stops - about 7/16". This will expose the two plastic mounting tabs in rectangular slots at 3:00 and 9:00. Pull tabs inward with a sharp instrument to remove the outlet assembly.
Hope this helps.

Has anyone given you a recommendation? I just bought a 2000 still under power train warranty and would like to get an extension.
#8576 of 9498 repacement keys
Jun 08, 2005 (2:11 pm)
I have lost my master key - the one with the automatic lock/unlock. I do have two other keys so don't need to replace it...but I really miss the convenience. Any suggestions on where to order a replacement other than the dealer?

There are now several aftermarket sources for OEM-type Lexus remote keys. I believe these are sold only to locksmiths but your's should be able to obtain them and then cut and program the blank for considerably less than dealer prices. This presumes that you still have one original registered master key available. Here is one supplier:
National Auto Lock Service
