Holy Cow thats alot of problems for such a low mileage vehicle. I too have a 1999 Expedition with the 5.4L V8 with 70,000 Miles on it and have had no problems with it knock on wood. However Ford does have an Engine/Head gasket replacement program for its 5.4L V8 engines during this year beacause of a machining error at the factory.
Here are the TSB's for the 5.4L head problems.
TSB #
02-2-3 Engine - Aluminum Block/Head Machining
02-1-4 Engine Head Gasket - Approved Replacement Procedures

Here is an article posted on another website.

Ford works to repair trucks' V8 head gasket
DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is working to improve an engine defect that is causing oil leaks in some truck models. A head gasket is causing leaks from some 5.4-liter V8 truck engines, primarily in F-Series pickup trucks from the 1999 model year, Ford spokesman Todd Nissen said. The affected engines also are installed in some Ford Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators and Econoline vans.

As for the transmition...I haven't found anything on that. Do you do any towing? I think Ford recommends the Transmition fluid be changed at 30,000 miles. Still your fluid shouldn't be that bad.
I also looked at consumer reports and transmition failures for 1999 models are very rare. However the engine problem is noted.
Yikes...Hope this helps and the best of luck to you and your problematic Expedition.

You do have some problems! A place that might give you some help is www.flatratetech.com (then use the "contact us" button). They seem to be Ford mechanics and technicians who want to help. Your engine problem is very well known and documented in this forum and in the ford truck sites so you should get help for that at least. Good Luck!

#911 of 1707 SUV Question??? by frankno1

If you have a Ford Expedition with a 4X4 drive it is considered a SUV? If you have a Ford Expedition with 2WD is it still a SUV or is it a big station wagon? Or is the style of the vehicle and the usage of it?

Just Curios,

Edmunds considers it a SUV most places. But we also define a SUV as A vehicle that offers available four- or all-wheel-drive and raised ground clearance in combination with a two- or four-door wagon or convertible body. link

Finally! Ford today announced the new 5.4 3v for the Ford F150 and other trucks (expedition) early in the new year. 300hp & a 5% improvement in fuel economy. Good numbers in my book.

They mentioned the needed replacement to the current 5.4 which is pounding them in reviews as lacking power relative to the competition.

This anouncment has made my day and I will be one of the first in line.

btw, I read about it in www.detroitnews.com under the auto section.

#915 of 1707 Horsepower ??? by frankno1

Nov 07, 2002 (9:30 pm)

My 2003 XLT has 260 hp and 350 lbs of torque. It is rated for 8900 lbs towing (4x2). It will pull my trailer faster than is safe to tow. I don't think I need anymore horsepower because I don't think I need it. I think if I owned a Cobra and wanted to really show everything up I could then I think that a 3V engine would be the cats meow.

I can haul 8 people around in comfort and I think that is where the Expedition really shines. If Ford wants to develop something that can make all the Expeditions shine is to develop a heavy duty transmission that is strong and reliable as the engine.
Just an opinion,
Frankk

#916 of 1707 DVD Player by rjm13

Just bought a new 03 EB Expy with the new $1500 rebate. When the sound is split between the front and middle seats can the middle seats listen through the speakers or only the headsets. Speaking of headsets is the Expy supposed to come equipped with the headsets? Lastly does anyone notice a crackle coming from the sub when listening to DVDs? Other than the manual recline on the seats this thing is great. It drives better than my old '00 Grand Cherokee.

#917 of 1707 Expy's new 3v engine by califjohn

may need some time to work out the bugs first. Ford is having head gasket trouble (!) with the new aviator engines and that does not bode well for the Expy either, given the head gasket/block oil leak history with this engine series. So far no trouble reported with the 3v but as far as I can tell they are not out on the road yet. For those interested Blue Oval News had this info.
