What is this discussion about?
Toyota 4Runner, SUV

Shucks, I will really miss my tailgate. The Cruiser is the only Toyota SUV with a tailgate. I well remember back in 1987 when I bought my 1986 4Runner Turbo (w/cool digital dash!)that the electric window inside the tailgate was a big item that sealed the deal for me. It was also another big item I took into consideration 8 years later when I bought that last production 1995 4Runner rather than pay primo+ sticker price for the 1996 coming out a month later...that Cruiser is looking better and better to me, or maybe I'm just trying to talk myself into one!..ha,ha. But seriously, I know alot of people that miss the older tailgates in the 4Runners and wonder why Toyota did away with it?

md2002, my understanding it that the V8 is not just exclusive to the Limited, but I could be wrong. It would be a HUGE mistake on the part of Toyota to not offer it. I may decide I like the 8 better, but I don't want a Limited either, well at least if it shares the same components as the current Limited. Leather is a pain in the ass, literally, in Arizona in the middle of the summer, so I want cloth, and I don't want the running boards that interfere with off-roading. The Sport Edition is perfect, so they had better offer that again, and with a V8! I haven't heard anything to the contrary, but maybe Cliffy1 can confirm...

I hear ya.' Why can't manufacturers bring back the drop/swing tailgate like on the old station wagons? That would solve the issue of loading without having to lean over the tailgate, while still having the option of a dropping tailgate when you need it. My dad's '96 Roadmaster wagon had that, and that was only 6 years ago! I hope Chrysler gets on the stick with their lift/drop tailgate, forcing other manufacturers to follow suit.

Where did you hear that?

I just visited the dealer today. There were told the dealer demo test drives they set up to compare is still on and will be sometime in late summer.
Buzz is it possible you are just a bit gullable and your "sources" are pulling more than you leg?

I don't have total production information as of yet, but that way I remember hearing it is that the Limited will only be available in the V8--not that the V8 would only be available in the Limited.

Your leg pulling is getting old.

I load and unload a ton of photo gear at well over 140 events a year and that tailgate has never bothered me in the least. The idea of the entire huge back lift raising up behind my vehicle bothers me alot. I really like tailgates, period...especially the older 4Runner type with the electric back glass.
Some people think I'm the poster boy for Toyota SUV's the way I rave about them. This is especially so when they see me packing all that gear into the 4Runner. They can't believe their eyes...which of course leads into another rave about the vehicle. Actually, it took me three attempts before I got the packing configuration down pat. So far, I've converted two family members, several friends, and god knows how many innocent bystanders!...now, if I could only decide between spending the bucks on the Cruiser, or sticking with the 4Runner. The great thing is that whatever choice I finally do make I can't go wrong because both are #1 in their class, and that my friends is a comforting thought.
