In agreeance with diablo_dude. I've been looking for a good crew cab truck in the Seattle area for about a year. I keep looking back at the 2005 F-150 crew cab 4x4, but I keep reading reviews in various online sites that the F-150 reliability is marginal at best - almost downright crappy. I hear more and more about vibration and the overabundance of anger and time spent on existing owners trying to isolate and fix their problems.
I'm pretty upset over this, as I have a '99 Ford Ranger that's been flawless (bought new and has 87k on it as of June 2005) and I LOVE its unbeatable comfortable interior and that of the '05 F-150. Damnit. Oh well. Not worth the unreliability risk.
The '05 or '06 RAM, TITAN and TUNDRA seem to be the three I'll be whittling it down to. Ram is coming out with a new XXXL crew cab around July or August 2005; I'll be test driving that one as well. PASS on the Chevy 1500. I tested one and the power, styling and interior doesn't seem to have been touched since what appears to be the late 1980s or early 1990s! The interior has the cheapest crap in it I've seen across the board. It's an insult to think the expect us to buy this thing when there are so many other trucks out there that trounce it in appearance and power. Seriously, pass on the Chevy 1500.
Too bad Mexico doesn't make a truck for the American market. Oh, wait...they do. Isn't it called a Ford?

#1260 of 2180 2005 Ford F150 5.4L 3V by jwarmstrong

I am the owner of a 2005 Ford F150 4X4 with the 5.4L 3V motor. I have owned the truck 3 weeks. The truck developed a tapping noise coming from the passenger side of the motor. The dealer read a technical service bulletin stating there is a seal issue on the cam for some 2004-2005 5.4L motors with the 3 valve motor. A kit was developed to solve the problem. Upon installing the kit the check engine light came on with multiple DTC's. The dealer got a another technical service bulletin with 9 pages of steps to follow starting with installing a new alternator. Its been two weeks. I am driving a Taurus loaner car and paying for a $35,000 Ford F150. Well, sort of paying for the truck. It is not yet time for my first payment. I should have gone to the Toyota Dealer.

#1261 of 2180 The Mysterious hose by wblair

Jun 26, 2005 (5:44 pm)

I recently looked under the rear of my 1999 Ford F 150 and found a hose hanging down. When i looked closer i found that it was connected to the rear axle where two brake lines connect along with another line on the drivers side but could not find where it should be connected to. It has a black plastic nipple with two clips to hold it in place. If any one would have an idea of where it should go i would greatly appreciate the info.

Diablo_Dude, to get the 10K difference in acqusition costs I am comparing the purchase price of a modestly optioned Taco and Tundra (auto, 4 litre for the Taco, V8 for the Tundra, 4X4, access cab, etc.) with the purchase price of an F150 XLT Supercab 4X4. Of course, that 10K difference is even larger if you dropped a trim level to say the XL. If you stumble onto a Ford lot these days, you can get 10K off the Moroney by simply fogging a mirror. In other words, you are going to be going home in the XLT for 21K. The Japanese aren't going to give it away for anything less than 30-31K.

Having said that, I think that the Ford has far more features, more power, better ride, somewhat comparable mileage (these Tacos and Tundras are not great on gas, despite the image) and comparable dealer satisfaction as the Toyotas. (As the Toyota volume goes up their JD Power "satisfaction with dealer" ratings go down and now are comparable to Detroit.) The problem with Ford is reliabilty.

WELL i HAVE A 1997HEAVY DUTY 250 WITH THE SAME SET UP ON IT, IT APPEARS THAT IS NORMAL FOR THE TRUCK AND ITS A VENT OF SOME KIND. JUST THOUGHT YOU LIKE TO KNOW THEY ALL HAVE THAT

Most likely this is the vent for the differential. The transaxle needs a vent for normal operation, but if water gets in it kills it pretty quick. They run the hose up a bit higher on the vehicle so it acts like a snorkle and gives you a bit of safety margin if you drive through deep water.

If you ever go through water that's as high as the floor of your truck bed, you need to change the differential fluid within a very few miles.

#1265 of 2180 The Vibration continues by rjspaeth

I posted earlier that my 2005 F150 Supercrew Lariat with the 5.4 L V8 built in Kansas City was experiencing vibration at highway speeds. They just replaced all 4 tires and it appears the problem is still there. I will drive the truck and see if it is as bad as it seemed on the way home. I am open to any suggestions anyone might have. As I stated before I like my truck, but I just want the vibration to stop. I have already had my vehicle in 3 times for service on this problem and the truck only has 2000 miles on it.

I am really starting to get frustrated.

I talked with a Ford sales guy tonight who seemed fairly open about the problem. (His F150 and his Service Managers both have the problem.) Seems like it is worse on CrewCabs but is found randomly among F150s. Some have it, some don't. Apparently, no F250s have it. Given the closeness in price, buying an F250 may be the way to go.

#1267 of 2180 Has anyone Successfully fixed the steering wheel shudder? by rjspaeth

Has anyone successfully fixed the steering wheel shudder?

I had 4 tires installed and it is still a problem. I have another appt at the dealer next week. This will be Apt #4.

Does Ford know they have this problem or are they attributing it to the road feel? For a $40,000 truck I don't want to feel the steering wheel move from side to side when I am cruising down a smooth road at 55 MPH or greater!

"Does Ford know they have this problem ...........................?"

I think one or two people might have mentioned it to them.
